[DL-C] The Crossing In The Cave
by
Bruce Berg <bberg@discover-net.net>
Scene: Deep in the cave near the Isle Lake
>He led them quickly down the passage, and the sound of the water grew
>louder with each passing step. Soon the passage widened out and they
>found themselves standing on a wide ledge overlooking an underground
>stream. The stream had cut a chasm across the passage 20 feet deep and
>15 feet wide. The water churned across the rocks at the bottom of the
>chasm.
>
>J'rrid stood looking across at the passage on the other side. Getting
>across would be difficult, but did they even need to?
>
>"Take a look at this," Katrina called out.
>
>J'rrid walked over to where she was kneeling near the edge of the ledge
>a few feet away. Next to her was a 2" diameter steel spike sticking a
>few inches out of the rock. Another one was located a few feet farther
>downstream. They were fairly clean and new looking. "I wonder how
>those got there," he said.
"Well I don't think they just grew out of the rocks", said Katrina smiling
trying to add a bit of humor to the so far unsuccessful search for Lenna.
While the team talked about the spikes, who put them there, and how the
team could cross the gorge Katrina heard the distressed thoughts of Azure:
<Syren is very upset. She saw the Warrenlady speaking to Voger's rider,
and then for no apparent reason she attacked the young rider, sending him
over a cliff. Voger said his rider was only trying to help the Warrenlady-why
would she hurt him like that?>.
Katrina felt a cold emptiness in the pit of her stomach. The thought of
any rider attacking another, unprovoked or off the training field bothered
her greatly, but the thought of the Warrenlady doing such a thing made
her ill and very concerned. She turned to tell the others, but she could
see by the looks of shock and concern on their faces, that their dragons
had already told them of Cynthia's actions.
Katrina sent,<What of Voger's rider Azure, how is he?>.
<He is seriously injured, but is still alive at the moment>.
Katrina could sense the sadness in her dragon's last thoughts. She felt
a lump in her throat as she thought about what would happen to Voger if
My'kel didn't survive. Her thoughts were interrupted as she heard
J'rrid say to her with in an understanding voice:
"Shaithos just told me that Voger has found My'kel and there is a nomad
female with him, she is trying to heal him. I was also told that Syren
contacted the warren, so more are on their way to see what is up. I have
also sent a couple of riders from our team, to meet up with some others
here in the cave to assist as well. Are you alright Katrina?"
Katrina sighed and said,"Yes I'm ok, it is just such sad news about
My'kel, and Cynthia..", her voice trailed off.
J'rrid put a comforting hand on Katrina's shoulder and said,"We will
find out what is wrong with Cynthia, there must be some reason for what
happened. Now what say we work on crossing the gorge." Katrina nodded.
Since Katrina had already shown that she had a strong throwing arm and
an accurate aim, she was chosen to throw the rope and hook which the team
had with them. She scanned the far rock face and chose a stable spot. She
sent the hook and rope over the gorge where it lodged in the rock near the
passageway they had spotted earlier when they arrived.
(NRPG:I have no idea what the proper name for that hook is that you
see get thrown on the end of ropes. 'Dang it Jim I'm a dragonrider not a
rock climber'-sorry for that Trek bit I couldn't help myself) <VBG>.
J'rrid pulled the rope tight and secured it to the spikes Katrina had
found before. Everyone donned their riding gloves to protect their hands
and headed across. J'rrid went first to make sure the rope was safe. Out
of the four riders left in the team, Katrina was one of the last to cross.
As she was going across, she was well aware of the river way below her.
Azure sent,<Why are you worried about crossing? You have traveled at
such heights upon my back.>
Katrina replied,<Yes my dear dragon that is true, but at least on those
time your broad body was beneath me, and now there is nothing but empty air>.
To which Azure replied,<My broad body, are you saying I'm fat?>
Katrina grinned as she recalled a conversation she had had recently with
Azure about her saddle being tight on her. Katrina replied back:
<No you are not fat Azure. By draconic standards you are just well
proportioned>.
As Katrina's feet conected with solid ground, she again grinned as she
wondered how her dragon would interpret that last comment. The team all
made it across safely and headed down the new passageway in hope of having
more success on this leg of the search.

tag: Anyone doing the rogues (Alton?), or Barb with what is up with Lenna.
All: I know it isn't much, but it did give Katrina's feelings about
the attack by Cynthia and it got the search party over the gorge and
moving again-will they succeed this time? Tune in next time-same dragon
channel, same dragon ti...oops got carried away there.<BG>
