<< The man picked her up and slinged her over her shoulder and said "Your
dragon or mine?"
"Mine. You can put her in front of me. I suspect she'll stop struggling
once we get off the ground." At that she fainted going limp over his back,
not only were they taking her to the dragon, but they expected her to sit on
ones back and ride it!
It was more than her mind could take after just reliving the death of her
lover in the clutches of a dragon.
It wasn't that she didn't know about dragon riders, many of the raiders she
had lived with over the past three years were from dragon lands. One had even
been a rider before his dragon died and he had been exiled. She was quite
familiar with stories of dragons fighting wraiths with the aid of there
riders, but she thought that dragons were like horses. Beasts that you kept
as mount, but she didn't trust them to be tame. Much less companions or even
friends.
The flight back to the warren was uneventful since she remained unconscious
until they got her to the med center. She woke up in a hospital bed with
someone looking her over. She was startled by her change in surroundings, the
room was crisp white walls with chairs and a bed. To a woman who has lived in
a tent all her life it seemed very odd.
The stranger said in a soothing voice, "Its OK, IM S'lomon, I am just
checking you over to see that your all right. Other than a few bumps and
bruises, and the dehydration I think you are fine." He handed her a glass of
water, "take a drink but not too much, your body is still in shock and you
will have to take it slowly getting you back into shape."
He helped her sit up and drink the water careful not to spill it. She
coughed slightly then asked in a dry gravely voice, "Where am I?"
"You are at Cleft Warren," S'lomon replied. "Some dragon riders brought you
in from there patrol they found you lying in the desert. Do you have someone
we can contact to let them know your all right? Your tribe maybe? Some
friends?"
"I have no one, no tribe and no friends."
He looked at her with compassionate eyes "your welcome to stay here as long
as you have need," he said.
She thanked him and laid back exhausted and he left the room to let her
sleep.
Later one of the men who brought her here came in, "Are you feeling
better? IM M'yer, do you remember me?" he asked.
"Yes, I do" she said, "and I thank you for your help."
"S'lomon said if you felt able to get up that you could come to dinner. The
dining hall isnt too far if you feel up to the walk. Would you like to come
eat and maybe you could tell me how you got out into the middle of the desert
alone like that?"
She got up weakly and followed him out of the room and to the front door of
the med center and stopped looking at the huge dragons that were sitting in
different positions around the warren. M'yer stopped with her and looked at
the hesitation on her face and tried to soothe her saying "Its all right they
wont hurt you."
"Don't you keep them penned up or tied or something? Don't they get out of
control?"
M'yer laughed, "there not like horses! There intelligent, like
people, and we talk to them and they answer us. They don't do things because
we force them to, but because we want them to and they want to. Most of the
time its the dragons that give us the orders!"
She was confused but followed him out facing her fear.
((NRPG I hope no one minds me abducting M'yer, I wanted to get out of the med
center and join the party.)) >>
