[DL-C] Kick 'Em When They're Down

Day 2
<snip>
"I know this thing between us is new," he said slowly as if trying to
find some excuse for her actions... But found he couldn't justify this
one. "And I know you may be a little scared of how fast things were
going between us... But if you'd decided you didn't want to be with me
*Lady Maddy* then you should have just said so! I'm a big boy now. I
could have accepted that. But I never would have dreamed you go far or
would be so spiteful as to forge my name on a transfer request just to
get rid of me. That's going way to far!"
He was far to angry now to see the shocked, puzzled, hurt expression on
her face, as he threw the document down on top of her desk. But went on
before she could say anything to defend herself after picking it up and
reading it.
"Don't worry sweetheart... I won't bother you any more... If that's what
you want. You got it! There's other women out there who won't mind
slumming with a lowly little Dragonrider like me. I just pity the next
poor fool who falls in love with you. You're dangerous lady."

Lonnie was gone before Madyllin even had time to form the words to call
him back. "Fine! Be that way, see if I care, you big jerk!" she called
after his retreating back, unsure if he could even hear her.
Her anger quickly cooled in the face of the document she held in her
hand. It was unquestionably a transfer...for Lonnie...and it sure as
hell looked like her handwriting, but how could she have written it and
not known about it? She didn't have any answers - not that it seemed to
matter to Lonnie, she thought, her anger returning. If he really loved
me, he'd at least listen to my side of things.
She froze in her pacing as her thoughts sank in. Love? Oh no, she
couldn't! She sank into her desk chair with a groan. Pregnant by one
man, in love with another - the court ladies she'd grown up around had
names for women who got into these sorts of messes. Maddy sighed. Not
that it seemed to matter anymore...
Taking a deep breath, she forced the thoughts of Lonnie - and Andahar -
out of her mind and focused on the paperwork in front of her...for all a
minute before Feysal walked in.
******
Maddy stood locked in Feysal's grasp, the knife pressing cold and sharp
against her back. Ayesha was still growling her outrage behind them and
it was all Maddy could do to keep the queen from attacking Feysal
outright, human or not. This was in its way a good thing, as it kept
Maddy herself from collapsing into a terrified little puddle on the
cavern floor. Her eyes widened suddenly as Andahar moved in their
direction. Her Nomad wasn't quite ready for the speed of his speech,
but she caught most of it. How DARE he? She was still fuming over his
suggestions when he charged Feysal, knocking him away from her.
<snip>
Feysal, however, had slumped to the ground.
Madyllin stood there shaking. Turning on Andahar she yelled, "What were
you thinking? He could have stabbed me!"
"Thinking? I was rescuing you, you stuck up, arrogant bitch!"
Andahar/Amar shouted back.
<end snip>
Maddy froze for a brief moment, utterly taken aback. However savage
Andahar undoubtedly was, he'd never been outright rude before. Gritting
her teeth, she turned to Andahar and replied formally in the Nomad
tongue,"Dog of Anavasha is fit only for slave of stone-tent women. Let
Hehran make Andahar chunor - you are fit only to sire other men's
children."
Andahar clenched his fists, but made no move toward her, his eyes torn
between hitting her for her insult and...and what? At the back of
Maddy's mind, the thought occurred that he could NOT possibly let so
vile an insult pass, but he turned away with nothing more than a "You go
too far". Maddy watched him, her thoughts tumbling over one another.
How...odd.
Maddy spun away, stopping to level a vicious kick at the helpless Feysal
before striding toward her own quarters. It took all her will to keep
from bolting, but the court had been a harsh school. Once inside,
however, she sank to the floor, shaking as the tears ran down her face.
Her hands moved to cradle her still flat belly. "Dear gods," she
murmured brokenly, aghast at what had so nearly happened. Then she
slumped forward, sobbing
******
Maddy blinked muzzily and looked around. Good lords, had she fallen
asleep on the floor? She grimaced wryly. Well, it had been quite a
morning...and she was sleeping for two.
<My rider, will you please see what is upsetting Mystarria's rider? Her
whining is getting on my nerves.>
Maddy rolled her eyes. Obviously this morning's misadventure didn't
bother Ayesha too much. With a sigh, she struggled to her feet and
headed for the Med Center. She hadn't reached the place before the
sound reached her ears. Someone - no, two someones - were screeching at
each other - in Nomad. Maddy couldn't quite make out all the words, but
she had a sinking feeling that whatever was "upsetting Mystarria's
rider" involved that noise.
She was therefore not entirely surprised to find that one of the voices
was Saleh's. Maddy didn't recognize the Nomad man yelling at Saleh, but
now that she was close enough she understood the words. Whoever he was
he was demanding that Saleh leave with him. HONESTLY. The girl just
gave birth and moreover she wasn't leaving this warren.
Maddy forced her way between the two of them and turned to face the
man. In careful Nomad, she raised her voice only just loud enough for
him to hear. "You are wrong. Saleh is dragonrider now. She goes
nowhere."
