[DL-D] Cries in the night

(Ok, this is the replacement for At the Gate because I wasn't home all
day, and that story didn't go to all the people it needed to because my
e-mail system is just stupid. So everybody just erase At the Gate. Sorry
again for the inconvenience.)

Dyanisa just stared at Sienra as the little dragon moaned and rock
softly to herself. She didn't have the strength to do anything else. Over
two weeks with almost no food, less sleep, and constant fear, had finally
caught up to her. She was sick, sore, and beyond hunger and exhaustion.
Dyanisa was honest enough with herself to admit that it was only her love
for her dragon and sheer determination that had kept her from collapsing
days ago.

Dyanisa's vision started to swim again, and she locked her knees
instictively. If she fell now she wouldn't get up again. *Sienra,* she
pleaded to her grieving hatchling. *Please, we need to go now.* Sienra
didn't stop keening, but at least she started to move. That was enough for
Dyanisa.

She snapped back into the real world several miles down the road.
<Dya?> Sienra whispered softly. <Are you ok now?>

Dyanisa nodded wearily and looked up as a splotch of white caught
her eye. Reflexively, a knife flew from her hand and landed with a thud in
the rabbits back. At least her skills hadn't totally failed her, Dyanisa
thought bitterly. Not that rabbits would feed a growing dragon.

She staggered off the road and retrieved her kill, almost falling on
her face with every step because she was shaking so hard. With a jerk,
Dyanisa pulled the knife out of the soft fur and sat down to skin it as
Sienra joined her. Her figures were covered with blood, not all of it the
rabbit's, by the time she finished.

When they had finished with their meal, the returned to the road.
Both knew that if the warren wasn't reached by sunrise it wouldn't be
reached. They walked on.

A few hours before dawn they found the gate. Dyanisa promptly
collapsed shaking with fever, while Sienra cried out to the dragons inside
in fear.

(That should do it. Hope this works better. Bridget Olson)
