[DL-D] Old and new friends

While the young rider's attention's were still focused on her son,
Jayleigh's eyes met those of her brother's, silently asking for his opinion.
Ja'ks gave a quick nod of acceptance, and she returned it, agreeing to give
the man a chance. But not now. Now all she wanted to do was stop by the dining
hall and get her mother to pack a meal for herself and Jadain to take home.
After a log soak in the tub, she planed on finding her bed and sleeping until
the sun came up over the rise.
"Kylan, so much has happened here in the warren today, and I still
have a few things to do, so now would not be the best time for us
to talk about your request," she saw the smile fade from Kylan's
tanned face and thought she understood why. He thought he would be
sent from the warren. "So why don't you go with Ja'ks and let him
show you around a little and then let him take you over to the
dining hall for something to eat. When you're finished, he can show
you to one of the availible apartments and you and Cuprus can sleep
there tonight. We'll talk in my office in the morning."
---------------------------------------------
The dark haired woman remounted her queen dragon and was off.
Kylan turned to Ja'ks and said, "I guess we're with you."
"Yep, let me show you around a little. Follow me and Sprarroe."
Ja'ks replied.
They both mounted on their dragons. And Cuprus sent to his mate,
<I have never seen so many dragons in all of my life.> Kylan could feel
him quivering with excitement between his legs.
Ja'ks set down and led them to a row of apartments. He showed
them Kylan's room and the dragon chamber for Cuprus.
Kylan left all of his stuff here, including his long knife. For
some reason he felt completely safe and comfortable with these people.
Granted, it was nice just to be around people.
Ja'ks then led them to the dining hall. He left Cuprus in the
hands of another man to be fed. The two humans walked in, got their
food, and sat down. The dining hall felt dead and almost empty, even
though it was more than half full. Ja'ks and Kylan got into a
conversation of their adventures. Kylan was telling the story about the
time that he and Cuprus were chased out of a town by a torch bearing
mob. Just then someone stood up and went to the front of the hall. He
began to play a harp. It was a sullen song, the minor chords rising and
falling in waves of beauty. Then the song rose in intensity and the
harmonics completely changed. Kylan felt tears coming to his eyes this
was the most beautiful piece he had ever heard. The music then changed
again, this time thiving on minors and dissonance. The song ended, and
even through the haze of tears, he realized that he had seen this man
before. The man got up and quietly left the room. Kylan, anxious for
the chance to meet someone here that he knew, muttered to Ja'ks, "I'll be
right back." He got up quickly and ran after the man. Ja'ks after a
moment got up and followed, obviously not completely trustuing Kylan yet.
"Wait!!", Kylan called out
The man slowly turned around, squinted and realized that he knew
this man too. "I've met you before. But where? You're K..Ky..Kylan,
right?"
Kylan was somewhat taken aback, not expecting to have him
remember his name. At the same time Ja'ks entered the hall. "That's
right. I don't remember your name, but I do remember that a while ago, you
asked me to help you with your harp playing. It was in a town somewhere down
south."
"My name is Gerald. You're right I remember now, right after one
of your performances." Gerald still looked very depressed and asked,
"What are you doing here?
"My dragon and I want to make this place our home. We go to see
the warren lady tomorrow morning, I don't think they trust us yet. Not
that I blame them."
"Wait a minute...Dragon?", Gerald said quizzically.
"Yes, Cuprus is his name. We always kept his presence a secret
as much as possible. He tended to scare villagers."
By this time, Ja'ks had approached and asked, "You two know each other?"
Gerald replied, "Yes, we met about a half a year ago." After a
short pause he continued, "Might I go to see the Warrenlady with him
tomorrow?"
This surprised Kylan a great deal. He had not expected this type
of response from him. But before he could say anything Ja'ks had given
his assent and Gerald had said goodbye. Gerald walked away very slowly.
Kylan and Ja'ks returned to the dining hall, which was even
quieter than before. They finished their dinner and Ja'ks took him back
to his room. Upon arriving Ja'ks said, "I'll be back in the morning to
get you and then we'll pick up Gerald. Fare well."
"Fare well." Kylan replied. He and Cuprus retired to their
chambers, and talked away most of the night.
--------------------
(late morning, Kylan's Apartment)
The morning was cool and crisp. Giving the inkling of the
beginning of winter weather, but still too early in the season to be very
cold. Kylan wasn't waiting for too long before Cuprus told him. <Ja'ks
is almost here.>
<All right. How did you sleep, winged brother?> Kylan asked.
<For the part of the night that you DIDN'T keep me up, very well.>
Ja'ks and Sprarroe landed nearby and Ja'ks waved for them to
follow. Kylan mounted up and they all took to the sky. Gerald met them
in the air above his apartment. They landed and went to the door of the
Warrenlady. Ja'ks knocked and soon the response came, "Come in."
Ja'ks opened the door and motioned Kylan and Gerald inside.
Jayleigh was standing behind the desk sorting through parchments and
putting odds and ends into drawers. "Good morning brother. Good morning
Kylan." The Warrenlady said, then noticing Gerald. "I didn't expect to
see you here this morning. Sit down, all of you."
(nrpg: Barb and Allen, feel free to change any of this dialogue to better
fit your character)
As they were taking their seats, she also took one behind the
desk. She turned her attention to Kylan and cooly asked, "My first
question is: How is it that your dragon was warrenborn but you left the
warren?"
Kylan, somewhat nervously, replied, "I went to perform at the
warren near my house. There was a hatching and Cuprus didn't choose
anyone, but ran into me on the way out and literally followed me home."
Jayleigh chuckled quietly chuckled. Imagining Kylan trying to
shoo this hatchling away, and not succeding. She then asked, "Why is it
that you want to live here?"
"I want to live among people. And I want Cuprus to be around his
own kind. Down around the landboud I was not accepted at any town,
because I was not born there. So Cuprus and I have wandered for the last
four years. No place among the landbound would accept Cuprus so that
leaves the Warrens. I had heard tales that this was a newer Warren and
thought there might still be room left for us."
Jayleigh nodded her head and thought for a moment. Leaned
closer, over her desk and asked, "Why is it that I should trust you?"
Gerald took this as his cue. He chimed in, "That is where I
could come in Warrenlady." She turned her attention and Gerald
continued. "I met Kylan about a half year ago. He was giving a
performance in a town that I was at. I complimented him on his harp
playing, and free of charge he helped me on mine. We spoke at length for
many hours. I can find no fault in him. He is a trustworthy man, in my
humble opinion."
Kylan was absolutely astounded that Gerald would back him in this
way. Jayleigh just nodded some more and relaxed back into her chair.
She thought for a moment more and then had made her decision.

(nrpg: Sorry kiddies, only the Warrenlady can make that decision.
You'll have to wait until our next exiting episode.)
