Fwd: DL-D: What are friends for? (From Michael David Turek)
by
Dianne Eberle <regenta02@hotmail.com>
Hi all,
Just got back from the Con and while I was there I discovered that no one
got this post but me. Michael sent it to me 4 times before I got it so he
was obviously having mail problems that day. So I thought I'd forward it to
everyone.

>>DL-D - What are friends for?
>>
>>The Naiads arrival piqued Jason's interest in that here was an opportunity
>>to use his aquired skills to 'circulate' and most likely pick up some
>>interesting information; the kind that people often let slip in
>conversation
>>when they didn't really mean to. After observing M'lent being sized up by
>>one of the young ladies, he concluded that they were well practiced at
>>this
>>sort of occasion. Jason shrugged: if M'lent didn't see what was right in
>>front of his eyes, he deserved whatever would come his way. He made a
>mental
>>note to ask Someyn about her later. There were rumours circulating on why
>>M'lent had left Geode so suddenly and turned up at Daere. Jason hoped that
>>he would at least stay out of trouble.
>>
>>He also noticed that the 'Lord Naiad' that had arrived earlier was not the
>>person that attended the dinner. The double was good enough to fool mostly
>>everyone, but Jason wondered why he had gone to all the trouble. He
>>watched
>>the incident with Marialla out of the corner of his eye; noticed her
>anguish
>>as she ran off. He'd have to ask Allora afterwards why Mari had come out
>>like that. No wonder the Naiad looked bewildered: what had Marialla
>expected
>>to happpen if she dressed and acted like that? Women were the one thing
>that
>>often left him puzzled. You could never work out exactly why they acted
>like
>>they did.
>>
>>Jason positioned himself close enough to the Warrenlady and her guest as
>to
>>hear what they were saying. Something was obviously going on, and his
>>instinct was telling him he should find out what it was.
>>
>>****
>><snip>
>>
>>"Seem's like she's doing much better than I thought she would be." Jason
>>said as he smiled at T`rell. "I think we'll come back later."
>>
>>"No, stay...." said Mari. "I'm going to convince them to let me go home.
>You
>>can walk with me."
>>
>>The three dragon riders looked at each other. They knew that after what
>Mari
>>had tried to do to herself, it wasn't going to be easy for her to be
>>released. But would keeping her there be worse for her than letting her
>>go?
>>
>><end snip>
>>
>>"Uh, Mari" Jason said uncomfortably, "as much as you'd like to be able to,
>I
>>doubt Heron will let you walk out of here after what happened. I mean, you
>>*were* under restraints not so long ago." Marialla looked heartbroken.
>>
>>"Please? I really don't want to stay in here."
>>
>>"I'm afraid Jason's right Marialla" Heron stated as he walked in on them,
>>"you won't be leaving here until I think you're ready to." Marialla looked
>>at her friends and at T'rell for support, but the helpless looks on their
>>faces told her what she feared. She turned her head into a pillow and
>>began
>>to cry softly. T'rell made as if to ho to her but Heron held him back. "I
>>think it's time you left for a while" he said firmly, "she needs some
>>sleep."
>>
>>"But..."
>>
>>"Later, I said. It's not like she's going anywhere."
>>
>>"When will she be allowed out?" inquired Allora. Heron shrugged.
>>
>>"I'm not sure. At the moment she needs to be watched constantly in case
>>she
>>tries anything like that again."
>>
>>"Well, there are three of us" Jason told him, "we could make sure she is
>>never left alone for as long as you think she needs it."
>>
>>"And she would begin to feel a whole lot better if she was out of medical"
>>Allora offered.
>>
>>"If she has someone that she is close to with her all the time, she would
>be
>>less likely to try and hurt herself again" said T'rell. Heron glanced
>>around, wondering if they were being serious or not. It looked as if they
>>were. Having her friends around would help her to calm down. It was
>>against
>>his better judgement, but...
>>
>>"Alright, I will allow her to leave, on the premise that at least one of
>>you is with her at all times while she isn't sleeping." The three of them
>>nodded their agreement. "Also, she is to come back here every day and see
>>a
>>mind-healer." Reluctant nods this time. He turned to the elder rider.
>>"T'rell, I'm holding you responsible for her. Remember what that means."
>>
>>****
>>
>>T'rell held Mari closely as they left the Medical Center and headed for
>>her
>>apartment, leaving Jason and Allora alone for a moment.
>>
>>"Do you know what caused her to do that?" Allora shook her head.
>>
>>"No, but I have the feeling that she still hasn't recovered from before."
>>Her eyes darkened for a moment. "I know from personal experience; it's not
>>something that just goes away. You have to deal with it for the rest of
>your
>>life."
>>
>>"Maybe." They both fell silent and Jason felt Allora's awkwardness beside
>>him. Was she still thinking about that? That was another thing about women
>>he didn't understand. They never let anything go.
>>
>>"Allora, I told you to forget about it. You seem to think that it was your
>>fault I got into trouble, even though I have repeatedly told you
>otherwise."
>>
>>"But..."
>>
>>"No buts" Jason said with a grin. "Just think of the good it has done.
>>Next
>>time I'll know exactly how to go about things legally." They both laughed
>>and Jason felt her mood lighten a little. "I suggest we get some sleep. If
>>we're to keep Marialla busy then I think we will need it."
>>
>>*****
>>
>>NRPG: Well Dianne, I broke her out for you :P Just remember, Heron can
>>always order her back for 'observation'.
