[DL-J] Birth Of A Warren
by
Judi Marko
The party had been a wonderful idea and a great success. It was a
celebration much needed by the warrenfolk, dragonriders and landborn alike.
They needed a release from the tension-filled days of the past months and
were taking it. Evelle, though taking part in the revelry, also observed
it with approval. The troubles would still be there in the morning, but a
small break like this would give many a renewed energy for dealing with
them.
The good-byes brought to Evelle mixed feelings of nostalgia and sorrow as
it hit home that she would really leave the place of her birth in the
morning. There were so many friends, some known since childhood, whom she
would dearly miss. While it was true that Keldarra would be only a
teleport away, the demands on the time of a warrenlady would make such
visits a luxury to be cherished and taken when the opportunity was there.
Yet, with this, she recognized that a sense of detachment had begun. It
was a defense given by the mind that allowed one to say farewell to home
and loved ones and look with hope towards the future.
"It's time to go, my love." Wynn was at her side, holding her hand and
smiling down at her. "We have a busy day tomorrow."
"Yes, we do and you're right."
The two cast a fond look back at the warren dwellers as they left. As the
door to the dining hall closed behind them, they felt another symbolic one
opening in front. In minutes, Alicynth and Malekith had flown them high
above Keldarra to the apartment that would soon belong to someone else.
The black dragon and the copper were soon cuddling and deep in dragon
conversation.
"Our last night here," Evelle said softer and laid her head against Wynn's
chest. This apartment had been their home since the day their dragons grew
strong enough to fly. They would take with them their most precious
possessions, but there was much they would leave behind.
"Feeling a few pangs?" He stroked her hair, marveling as always at is
soft silkiness.
"Of courses. It was at Keldarra S'brogh and I played as children and it
was here that you came to us. Here that we joined with Ali and Malekith
and here that we found our love.
"Keldarra will always be special to us," he agreed. "And we'll make
tonight special, too."
"Every night is special with you, love."
"Then, shall we begin ours? Your wake-up call will be an early one, lazy
girl. We need to finish packing up and leave right after breakfast."
"Yes, my lord and master," she giggled, nuzzling his neck as he scooped
her up in his arms and carried her to their bedroom. He placed her gently
down on their bed and she lay still as he undressed her. She smiled up at
him as he stood just looking at her for a few minutes. He undressed
quickly and as she held out her arms in welcome, he lay down beside her.
Four sets of fingers ran lightly over bare skin as the heat built under the
touch of fingertips and eager lips. Evelle's arms and legs wrapped around
Wynn and she moaned throatily as his touch brought ever heightening
sensations of pleasure. How much time passed while they brought each other
closer and closer to the peak? Neither knew, nor did they care. They
stayed lost only in each other until the demand for release became
irresistible and they joined their bodies and let the explosion rock them.
Two nosy dragons observed with approval.

"Time to wake up, lazy girl."
Evelle's eyes fluttered open to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Wynn,
already dressed, sat on the edge of the bed with a breakfast tray. For
once she didn't protest being rousted from lovely sleep. This was a day to
be welcomed.
"Mmmm, thank you, love." She sat up and took several sips of the steaming
brew. "I'll finish quickly and get dressed. Will you finish packing up?"
"Already begun and half done." He kissed her, enjoying the flavor of
coffee on her lips. "Any second thoughts, Evelle?"
"Not a one," she assured him with a shake of her copper curls. "You?"
"None. Home is where the heart is, as one small black dragon reminded me,
and my heart is with you."
Evelle stretched and Wynn enjoyed the view. "Keldarra will be fine
without us. Even D`neor begins to show signs of growing into his role.
We'll soon be just a dim memory for them."
Not much later they flew down to the green to find S'brogh, D'glis,
Lisell, and Master Kershod already assembled there. Alicynth's excitement
mirrored Evelle's own. She greeted Master Kershod warmly.
"I'm so pleased you decided to come with us. I believe Wynn would have
missed his friend and teacher most of all."
"Ah, how could these old bones refuse one last adventure, my dear Evelle?"
he asked with a smile.
"Hardly your last, I'm sure, Master," she laughed. "I think there's a
great deal of life left in those, ahem, old bones of yours. Is everyone
ready to go?"
"Couldn't be readier, Sis." S'brogh's eyes were full of anticipation.
"I'm ready, too, Evelle," D'glis assured her. "But I do have a short trip
to make after we get to Jasra. I promised to visit a bard I know in
Norwall."
Lisell said nothing; her eyes were focused on Wynn. He greeted her
pleasantly, then turned to help Master Kershod onto Malekith's back as the
rest of the group mounted their dragons.
[Ali, have you given them the picture?]
[I'm sharing it now, Evelle. There! They have it. We can go.]
"Farewell, Keldarra," Evelle called out. "We wish you peace and
happiness."
The group blinked out. And blinked back in moments later high above
shimmering sands and sparkling blue water. The dragons flew down and
landed on the white sand, their riders dismounting.
"Evelle, it's as beautiful as you described," Wynn breathed, more certain
than ever that he was already beginning to love his new home.
"A virtual paradise," S'brogh agreed. "Hopefully filled with its share of
tropical beauties."
The young dragonrider Evelle had met on her first visit to the warren
hurried over to greet them. The look of sorrow he had worn then was gone.
"Greetings, WarrenLady, and welcome to Jasra."
"Thank you. B'layz, isn't it?"
"That's right and how gracious of milady to remember. If you will come
with me, the DragonLady is waiting for you in the Great Hall."
It had been late morning when they left Keldarra, but here, west of that
warren, the day was just beginning. Though it was winter, Jasra was also
far to the south. The early morning air was a bit cool, but warm enough so
that they had no need for the coats and capes they wore. Quickly shedding
them, the group followed B'layz. They were quiet, all of them looking
around and drinking in the loveliness that was Jasra. They arrived and the
Great Hall and B'layz showed them to the office where Vignette sat waiting.
Evelle spoke first.
"DragonLady." She curtsied with respect.
"Welcome to Jasra, Evelle. We cannot thank you and yours enough for
leaving your home to save Jasra from closing."
"We are happy to be here and Jasra is now our home. Allow me to present
my mate, Wynn, my brother, S'brogh, my courier, D'glis, DragonRider Lisell,
and Master Kershod, swordsman and teacher. Everyone, this is Vignette,
DragonLady of the Lost Warrens."
"Hardly lost to us, Evelle, but I understand what you mean." Vignette
smiled and acknowledged each of the others as Lisell curtsied and the men
bowed to her. They recognized the presence of a DragonLady in the slight
woman with the silver-streaked, raven black hair.
"I must soon return to Ismene Warren," she continued, "but I have asked
all of Jasra to assemble in the Dining Hall in one hour so that I may
introduce their new WarrenLady and those who come with her. Meanwhile, I
encourage you to explore Jasra, look for your apartments, and your dragons
will be fed."
While they did as Vignette suggested, D'glis mounted his Jubalth and
teleported to Norwall. An older bard who lived there and who had been one
of his teachers had asked him to visit. Jubalth landed on the green and
D'glis soon spotted the older man sitting with a female rider.
"Jenero. Good to see you again. What stories have you to tell?"
"D'glis!" The two men clasped forearms. One was a dragonrider, one was
not, but the bond of bardship was a strong one. "Alas, I had hoped for a
long visit where we would swap tales of prose and poesy, but thing have
changed since I sent for you."
"What then? Is there trouble, old friend?"
"Aye, some. My niece, a dragonrider, has become unhappy here at Norwall.
We need not go into reasons. I fear though that she will leave with
nowhere to go. This is her good friend, Aleipha. We will go with Piper.
She should not be alone, even with Bishvilea, at this time. I know not, my
friend, when we can next meet to exchange tales."
"Perhaps I have a solution if you and the lovely Aleipha would listen to a
tale?"
The two agreed and D'glis regaled them with the saga of Jasra, singing of
its watery beauty, hard times, and new beginning.
"Evelle of Keldarra has moved to the new warren?" Jenero asked in
surprise.
"She has, I have, and some others. Jasra would have need of skilled
riders and a teacher. Would you two and your niece consider coming back
with me?"
"Here she comes, l shall ask her."
While Jenero and Aleipha spoke with Piper, D'glis observed a deep sorrow
in the rider. He also had the sense of someone lurking not far away,
observing and listening to all that was said. He could spot no one and
gave not more than a cursory try. Jubalth, he knew, would be gathering
local gossip from willing dragons.
Almost before he could absorb these thoughts, Piper cried out, "Let's go,
then!" and leapt into her dragon's saddle, giving Jenero a hand up.
Aleipha followed suit and D'glis mounted Jubalth who gave the other two
dragons the picture they needed.
"Come with me," he asked as they dismounted in Jasra. There's to be a
meeting of all the warren in the dining hall."
*********************
D'glis and the others entered the dining hall in time to hear Vignette
introduce Evelle as Jasra's new WarrenLady.
"It has given me great happiness to provide you with a new WarrenLady so
that Jasra may remain open," she said. "I am sure you will all do all you
can to make Jasra's newest warrenfolk welcome. Evelle, I now name you
officially as WarrenLady of Jasra."
"Thank you, Vignette. All I can say is that we are happy to call Jasra
home. It will take some days before we get to know all of you, but you
will find the door to my office always open. By now you will have learned
of the realm we come from. All of us will be happy to tell you more of
Keldarra and DragonLady Christalla. It is my hope that soon we will not be
the newcomers, but your dear and valued friends."
Each of the others stood as she introduced them. Evelle took a deep
breath. She presented an image of complete composure, but she knew that
what she would say next might cause resentment in at last some of Jasra's
dragonriders. But she was now their WarrenLady, and it was best to assume
her authority from the first.
"Wynn is my mate and the one I trust most in the world. He is an
experienced WingLeader in the most dangerous of times. I name him how as
Alpha WingLeader and will expect you to give him your loyalty and respect.
I assure you he will earn both."
Such an announcement was bound to cause rumblings, but they were not
likely to be voiced while Vignette was present. She and Wynn were prepared
to deal with ruffled feathers, dragon or human. Spotting D'glis, Evelle
was surprised to see him with three others. She beckoned him over to the
long table at which they sat, eager to meet his guests. The older man
looked to be of an age with Master Kershod. This reminded Evelle that she
and Wynn still needed to talk over their plans to bring his father to
Jasra.
She sat down then as platters of aromatic food were brought to all tables.
A feast was a fine way to begin life at Jasra.
