[DL] Jasra: A new day
by
Chris Ackney

Scene: Evelle's and Wynn's apartment

Wynn tossed onto his back, and his eyes sprang open. With a few
blinks, he realized that he was awake, and glanced about the unfamiliar
surroundings. A second later he realized that the reason for the room
being different was because it was. They were at Jasra Warren now, and
in temporary quarters until they could settle down and stake out one of
the more permanent residences.

A warm weight pressed up against him, and his gaze peered down
at Evelle as she curled up against him. Wynn gently brushed the coppery
hair from her face, and looked down at the beautiful woman next to him.
It amazed him all the more how this young woman was Warrenlady of this
entire Warren, and again that she was his mate. He leaned over and
kissed her lightly on the cheek, and then carefully removed himself from
her sleep-filled clutches. She murmured quietly and turned over,
curling up in the mass of blankets that were on the bed.

Wynn shivered in the cool morning air, and quickly threw on a
heavy robe. The first morning of a new start. He walked to the kitchen
area, glancing outside, smiling at the sight of the two dragons entwined
about each other. <Good morning, my rider.> Malekith said quietly, his
cool blue eyes gazing over at the young man.

"Good morning you two." Wynn replied with a smile, and then
ducked back inside. He shook his head at the dreadfully understocked
kitchen. Well, nothing he could do about it except make do. After a
quick stock checking, he settled down to preparing breakfast. Hot apple
and cinnamon porridge would be a good start.

"Mmmmmm, good morning, my love." A softly feminine voice called
from behind.

Wynn glanced over his shoulder and gave a shocked smile. "Why
hello there, has the morning gone by already?" He teased.

Evelle gave a false grimace and then pouted. "I was hoping to
have an invigorating wake-up call, but then you up and left."

"I assure you I would have come back." Wynn leaned over and
kissed Evelle and she came to him. Her arms snaked around his waist.
"Afraid there isn't much variety for breakfast today, love, unless you
would like to go to the dining hall."

"It would probably be best. Give both of us a chance to meet
some of our newfound friends." Evelle said, snuggling up against her
love for warmth. Not that it was anywhere near as cold here as it was
at Keldarra, but it was a comfortable warmth that she was loath to give
up.

Wynn nodded, though he was loath to give up a morning wake up
call. Though he knew they would both be very busy today, and probably
for quite a few days after as well. He sighed, hating the concept of
business before pleasure. "Well, it will be a couple of minutes for
this to be ready, so why don't you get ready to start the day."

Evelle sighed, remaining against him for a moment longer before
reluctantly letting go. She paused a moment longer, taking his hand
into hers. "I love you, Wynn." She said quietly, looking up at him.

His heart fluttered at her words. "And I you. Now get yourself
ready before I spank that lazy bottom of yours." He winked.

Evelle gave a sly grin. "Is that a promise?" She teased, and
then skipped out of the room.

Wynn smiled and shook his head at his incorrigible lover. With
a sigh of his own, he turned back to the morning preparations.

Scene: The training Green

Lisell stood in back of Wynn and Malekith. She wasn't sure that
the move had been the right thing. She wanted to be with Wynn, and yet
she knew that it would never be. Why did she choose to torture herself
with this?

<Indeed, why did you?> A calm voice broke into her thoughts.
She shifted in annoyance, glancing over her shoulder to her blue
dragon. Thoseth levelled a knowing gaze.

<I don't know. Maybe I wanted to start a new life too.> At
least, that's what she told herself when logic began to see through her
hazy thoughts.

<Well, this is certainly a way to do it. From one perspective,
a hitherto unknown world has been revealed to us. I had never seen so
much water as I have this day alone.>

Lisell shivered. <I could do without it. All this dampness has
chilled me to the bone.> She tightened the cloak she wore about her.

<I know, my rider, though I have to admit I don't know why. I
find it quite wonderful.>

Lisell sniffed. <Well, we humans aren't made the same way as
you dragons.> She glanced about the massed riders. <What are the other
dragons like here?> She said, hoping to change topics.

<Like dragons elsewhere. Their riders are cautious, though. It
isn't easy for them to suddenly accept a new Warrenlady and a new Wing
Leader all at the same time.>

<Well, they'll soon learn that Wynn is the best.> Lisell said
confidently.

Wynn stood quietly as D'san talked to his Wingmates. The former
Wing Leader was twice Wynn's age, with carefully trimmed dark goatee and
hair. He had a dark, piercing gaze that added onto his age, and made
him seem much older than he was. His voice was quiet and even, and yet
carried over the green to the near 70 riders. "... and now our new Wing
Leader, Wynn." He stepped back, nearly coming up against the towering
green dragon Derelith.

Wynn cleared his throat and stepped forward. "I want to thank
you all for being here this morning. I know it can't be easy to accept
all the changes that have so recently occurred. I can only hope that my
experience at Keldarra will allow me to effectively lead the Wing here.
To do that, though, I need to rely on all of you to help me. I admit
right now that I do not know you, or even the tactics you have
developed. We need to work together, to be able to support each other
in combat, to rely on each others abilities. That will all take time
and practice. D'san and his second will lead Second Flight." Wynn
turned to the former Wing Leader. "I will be relying on your experience
and wisdom." D'san simply nodded.

Wynn took a breath and turned back to the riders. "Lisell will
be my Second, until such time as I get to know you all, and with counsel
I will revise the Wing into effective units. I only hope that I can
live up to your expectations."

Wynn walked back to Malekith. "We will begin with basic
maneuvers. There are a number of new dragons here, so we need to start
from scratch to get used to each other."

There were grumbles from the group, but all the riders went to
their dragons. Wynn patted Malekith's nose. "It's a long climb up,
isn't it?"

Malekith nuzzled his rider. <You've begun with a fine start, my
rider.>

Scene: Near dinner

Wynn ducked in through the open door. "Master Kershod?"

The older man shambled into the greeting room. "Ah, Wynn,
please come in. Just getting settled."

"So I see." Wynn smiled. He had to make two more trips after
the first to help bring the swordmaster's belongings. "Everything going
well?"

"Just wonderful, lad. The smithy here keeps a tidy shop with
top notch equipment. I plan to start on a new sword when I finish
moving my things about." Kershod grinned through his trimmed beard.
"And how are things with you, my boy?"

Wynn sighed. "I'm not sure about this, sir. I feel so out of
place here. At Keldarra it was easier, I knew most of the riders I flew
with. Here ... I know only a couple."

"And what of those who were new at Keldarra? Almiron, Briana,
and the others?"

Wynn nodded slowly. "I guess I'm just nervous. I feel bad for
displacing D'san for leadership. He has worked so long and hard, and to
be replaced with an upstart like me ..."

Kershod patted Wynn on the shoulder, leading the young Wing
Leader outside. "There are some things you need to know of D'san, lad.
It is true that he has led for a long time. Almost as long as you've
been alive. But when the previous Warrenlady died, well, something died
within him as well. He has only remained in command due to his
experience."

Wynn looked at his mentor. "And where did you find all this out?"

Kershod grinned. "There are those who don't mind talking to
strangers. The people here are friendly, if a bit reserved. You have
no idea how relieved many of them are to have a new Queen here at the
Warren. And if Alycinth can lay a new Queen in her next clutch,
stability will finally be assured."

Wynn shook his head in amusement. "You have been busy today, I
see."

"It only makes sense to get to know where you live." Kershod
replied. The two walked into the dining hall together. His face grew
grim. "The people here are scared, Wynn. Even with the arrival of
Evelle, she still hasn't proven herself, and neither have you. The two
of you will have to work very hard to achieve their trust."

Wynn, lost in his own thoughts and the words of his mentor,
stumbled into a young woman. Gaining his senses, he staggered to one
side to keep from bowling her over. "My apologies!" He said, regaining
his balance.

The girl looked up at him with dark brown eyes. "It's all
right, no harm done, Wing Leader."

"You're one of the newer riders, aren't you? That came here
with D'glis?"

The girl nodded. "I'm Piper, and this is my friend Aleipha."

"Well met." Wynn smiled. "This is Master Kershod. Would you
care to join us for dinner? I'm expecting my mate to be here soon, and
I know she would love to meet with you two."

NRPG: There we go, a little insight into my character and major npcs.
This all takes place the same day as when Evelle meets with Wade.
