Scene: The ledge
"Wynn!" Evelle screamed out, clutching at the ledge as dirt and
rubble ran through her fingers. Wynn rushed over as quickly as he
could, grabbing hold of Evelle's slim wrists. His hands, sweaty from
being worried for his mate, now threatened to let her slip from her
grasp. Bracing himself, he pulled strongly, and brought her up from the
yawning abyss beneath her and into his arms. She clutched to him
tightly, shaking against him as tears flowed from her eyes. Wynn
wrapped his arms around her tightly, protecting her from the still
falling dust and pebbles from above.
"Oh Wynn." Evelle said between sobs. The terror was over, and
now she could react to it.
Wynn kissed the top of her head. "Are you all right?" He held
Evelle a bit in front of him, checking her over. The small cut on her
neck was superficial, a small streak of blood slowly making it's way
down her neck. What worried him more was the blood on one of her arms.
He quickly looked at it, finding it as just a small cut on her forearm.
His guess was that Roland's knife somehow cut her bonds before he was
crushed.
"I'm fine, really." Evelle replied.
A loud crumbling noise called to his attention, and he saw
Alicynth flying back up into the air. The large Queen had tried landing
on the ledge, but the rock was too unstable, and had fallen away.
Evelle turned and faced her dragon, her eyes looking far away as she
talked to Alicynth. Wynn quickly pulled his vest off, as well as the
shirt he wore under it. Evelle turned back to her love, and Wynn
wrapped his shirt around her. "We have to find a way off this ledge."
Evelle told him. Wynn nodded his agreement, kneeling before her and
quickly untying the rope that held her feet together.
"Let's go, love. I'm not about to have us plunged off a
ledge." Wynn said, taking Evelle's hand tightly in his.
The two carefully made their way along the ledge, Wynn testing
the ground before him. The ground suddenly shook, leaving the two
shaking and attempting to keep their balance. Wynn fell against the far
wall, pulling Evelle into his arms. A loud rumble boomed from above,
and a huge rock landed a mere foot away from the two young lovers,
kicking up dust and rock. Wynn swallowed hard, looking at the now
blocked off trail behind them. He leaned over and kissed Evelle
softly. "A kiss for luck, love." He said.
Evelle nodded and took a deep breath, then followed slowly
behind her mate. Alicynth flew by, keeping an eye on her rider, but
knowing she could do nothing. The ledge they were following was far too
narrow for any dragon, and all the Queen could do was fretfully fly
nearby. They rounded a slight bend along the ledge, and found the path
broken.
Wynn's hopes sunk. "I'm going to talk to Malekith." Wynn
said. <Are you all right, little one?>
<I am well.>
<What about Talthalar, I haven't heard any trumpeting.>
<Why should there be? No dragon has died today.>
Now that was strange. Could it be that Roland was still somehow
alive? Impossible, Roland had to be crushed by all that rock, a fate
far better than Wynn wished for him. And yet, Talthalar had not killed
himself at the loss of his rider. Well, a puzzle they could think about
at a later time, now he had to concentrate on getting out of this alive.
<The rogue dragons have left. Can I do anything?>
<I wish you could, but there's no place for you to land. Try
and gather everyone, and see if you can pull Alicynth away. I can well
understand her worrying, but I don't want the chance of her getting hurt
right now, or distracting us at the wrong moment.> Wynn sent back.
<I will try. Good luck, my rider.>
Wynn took a deep breath, and surveyed the situation. The gap
wasn't too large, but it did not make things any easier. "I'll climb to
the other side, and then help you across, all right?"
"I don't want you to leave, Wynn." Evelle said, moving up
closer to him.
"I'm not going to leave you, my love, never. But we have to get
across. Please trust me." Wynn pleaded. He desperately wanted off
this mountain, with his mate right beside him.
Evelle kissed him this time. "I trust you with my life, my
love." She replied, and let go of his hand.
Taking another deep breath, Wynn looked more closely at the
wall, looking for handholds to help him across. With a final look to
Evelle, he chose his path and began to cross. Evelle looked on with
hopeful, yet fear filled eyes. A minute stretched into two, seeming
like hours, and then he was on the other side, making sure of his
footing before looking back to Evelle. He braced himself, then reached
across the gap. "Grab my arm, love."
Evelle reached out as well, and hands clasped firmly. Wynn
checked his footing, peering behind him before looking ahead again.
"Okay, jump to me."
Swallowing hard, Evelle tensed and then leapt forward, aided by
Wynn pulling her to him. He stumbled backwards and found himself
against the mountain wall, Evelle trembling in his arms. He squeezed
her tightly.
Regaining their nerve, they made quick time along the ledge,
more stable and secure on this side. Ahead they saw a large open ledge,
quite capable of holding a dragon, and they called out happily to their
dragons. It was then that the mountain shook again.
Wynn nearly lost his grip on Evelle's hand as they struggled to
maintain their balance and keep from going over the side. He reached
out with his other hand and pulled the young Queenrider to him. He
pressed her against the wall as rock fell all around them, tumbling and
thundering down the side of the mountain. Wynn closed his eyes,
pressing against Evelle as close as he could. He grunted in pain as
small rocks and shards struck him on their way down. And then, as soon
as it had started, the rumbling stopped. A moment later and the two
looked around each other, then smiles broke out on their faces as they
laughed. Amazing how too many brushes with death made one feel great to
be alive.
Evelle hugged him tightly, and then they set out again.
Gingerly walking around the loose rock and rubble, they made their way
as quickly as they could to the open ledge. The two dragons, copper and
black, appeared, rising from below as they examined the proposed landing
sight. Though not terribly large, it would do, especially for the short
time needed. Alicynth landed first, rising dust and blowing wind
through their hair and remnants of cloths. Wynn looked down to his
love, still beautiful despite the dirt and splotches of blood. "I'll
see you safely on the ground, my love." Evelle said softly, kissing his
hard before mounting onto her dragon's back. Alicynth lifted off
quickly, banking away from the mountain as Malekith glided in.
Wynn quickly straddled his dragon's shoulders. "You don't know
how good it is to be with you again, little one."
<I know all to well, my rider. Please say we're going home.>
Wynn nearly fell off with laughter. Oh what a horrible day this
had been. Thank the gods that it all turned out all right. "Nowhere
else, Malekith, absolutely nowhere else.
NRPG: Well, decided to have some fun with it. Everyone's safe and happy
(well, for now :)
Judi: I'm sure Wynn and Evelle will want to talk soon, and Wynn will be
wanting to pay special attention to her for the next little while.
