(DL-M) Retreat

[Trey]

Trey left the three to deal with the crazed man and headed down the hall to
David's room. The young man was sitting listening to the ruckus down the hall.

"Hello.  Remember me?  Tr'etram?"

David nodded. "I remember ye, Trey. What's all t' noise about?"

"Some new patient. He's delirious and raving."

"One of ours?"

Trey shrugged. "He didn't look like it to me, but I don't know everyone
here yet, and probably won't for a bit."

David nodded. "Et seems a lot o' dragons here have heard of ye now, though."

"Yeah."  Trey sighed.

"Es it true?" David watched him warily.

"As far as it goes, yes. What it fails to mention is that I was basically
insane at the time."

David nodded, remembering their first meeting. "And ye're not now."

Trey smiled. "Well, I hope not. I didn't get this scar on my head for looks."

David laughed and then winced.

"I just stopped by to see how you are."

"Fine as kin be expected."

"Well, I wanted to check before I retreated into my apartment till this...
rumour gets straightened out. You get to feeling better."

"I intend to, or me mate will have me hide fer not."

Trey smiled. "I know the type. Ophelia..." His voice died and he
shrugged. "Well, anyway, I'll be seeing you when I can, okay?"

[Koroth]

Koroth sat and watched as Yenal worked, their conversations hidden from the
humans around them.

<Roth, I'm ready,> Trey called him.

<All right, pet.  I'll be there.>

He picked up his rider at the Medical Center and headed back towards the
work area. As he was headed there, he heard Yenal's keening.

<Yenal, calm yourself, I will come to you.>

He arrived to see his friend circling the warren, keening frantically.

<He is gone, Roth. He is gone. My mind... my mind has been torn in half.
Help.>

<I am here, Yenal. I am here for you.>

<Who is that?>

<Who is what?> Koroth asked in confusion.

<There is someone here, talking to me, as you and I talk... His name... is
Touth.>

<Is he a dragon?>

<No, he is a human. His dragon is gone, dead. We will grieve together.>

Koroth thought about it. <It is fitting, Yenal. You two grieve and then we
will talk.>

[Trey]

Trey dismounted from Koroth and walked into his apartment.

"Diana?" he called.

There was no answer. Trey stood for a moment, taking in the silence of the
apartment. It was a thing he couldn't adjust to. His apartment at Telnor
had always been full of laughter, talking, and general happy mayhem. He
walked in, hearing his bootsteps echo in the empty apartment. There were
sweet baking smells coming from the kitchen and he headed there to
investigate. A cake sat on the table, still warm, the icing melting
slightly. Next to it sat a note. Trey picked it up and read.

        Trey, I would like to keep our luncheon date, but will understand if
        you wish to be alone. I don't wish to push myself on you. If
you would like me to come back for lunch have Koroth let Zena know &
I will come back. I would also like to keep you company some during
your self imposed confinement. To be honest, I am lonely & you seem
to ease that. But I also don't wish to be pushy if you need to be
alone. Whatever the decision, enjoy your lunch...you're not the only
cook around here!
                                        Your friend, Diana

Trey laughed and went to see what was in the icebox. He found a fried
chicken salad in there. It looked quite good.

He started hearing a keening. He stood, just listening to it for a moment
and then called, <Koroth?>

<It is Yenal, pet.>

<Is he okay?>

<He has a human that is comforting him, a dragonless rider named Touth.>

<That is good,> Trey said, nodding at the symmetry of the arrangement.
<Will you tell Zena to tell Diana that I'd like to have her for lunch.>

<I will, my friend.>

Trey sat and started back on his sewing project while waiting for Diana to
arrive.

<Trey,> Koroth spoke, <Aura says the meeting about you will be tomorrow in
the Great Hall. R'chein will be there.>

<Thank you, Roth.> Trey grimaced. He was not looking forward to this.
