M'rdith looked over at Roderick, who appeared to be lost in thought, "This 
one here is Roderick.  As for your indebtedness to myself, don't trouble 
yourself.  Simply do yourself a favor and rest and feed yourself so that you 
don't collapse.  I imagine that the Warrenlady or somebody important should 
be here to meet you soon."

With that the older man stood up and exited from the medical center.

Roderick shifted from foot to foot, glancing at the young woman but not 
quite meeting her eyes.  "Like he said, I'm Roderick.  And you've no need to 
feel any debt to me, either... I'm just glad I was able to help.  For once." 
  The ghost of a smile crossed his face, then was gone.  "I've got to earn 
my keep somehow, so I'm always looking for ways to pitch in.  Something to 
keep me busy, until..."  he hesitated.

Alaire prompted, "Until what?"

Roderick scowled into the distance.  "Leave me alone!" he snapped.  Looking 
quickly toward Alaire again, he stammered, "No, I didn't mean that for you.  
Sorry about that.  I've been... hearing things lately.  I think this place 
may be haunted."  He shook his head, looking exhausted.  "No one believes 
me, though."

He shuffled toward the door during the awkward silence that followed, but 
then glanced back toward Alaire.  "I'd be happy for some company at the 
dining hall, sometime... though I'm sure you've better ways to spend your 
time than with the likes of me."
