Meena reluctantly handed Demee over to Lacey. Looking at Naomi and getting a
reassuring smile, she motioned for her father to follow her. He fell in
behind her, but was unable to remain silent. "Meena, how can you deny me
what is rightfully mine?"

"You gave up that right when you refused to accept his father." she said
angrily.

Harkon cringed. "I admit, I've been selfish... I'm sorry for that. But that
doesn't mean you should take it out on the boy."

"You wanted nothing to do with him until now. Why should I send him to live
with someone who would deny who he was."

"Because it is his birthright."

"No!" she said turning and looking at him. "He is the son of dragonriders...
not landbound. His birthright is to grow up here and become a dragonrider."
She stared at her father, unable to believe that she had just looked him
straight in the eye without giving in. But it had been two years since she
had seen him, and she had changed a lot.

"You're talking about what that little girl said." he laughed, "What would
she know... It was a bluff Carameen, even I could see that."

She recoiled as he called her by that name. Devon had never called her that,
much preferring the simpler nickname 'Meena'. It was the name that Vonn
called her and it was the name that she took on now that she was a
dragonrider. "It's not a bluff... I've seen it myself. In how he reacts with
Vonn and she with him."

"It's not going to happen, I must have an heir."

"What *did* happen to Stont anyway, Lord Harkon? I think we'll have some
time before Naomi joined us." She walked into Naomi's office and offered him
a seat.

"What happened to your brother isn't important." Harkon said quickly. He
knew that the circumstances behind Stont's death would only get in the way
of his mission to get his heir. "What is important is that your child should
be rich and powerful and you are denying him that privilege."

NRPG: I do have a backup plan now in place for saving Demee from this bad
man :) So Les, if you feel we need to send Demee with Harkon until we can
get a better plan, feel free, Meena will not be happy, and she will vow to
get him back... but I have an idea of how to do it and still save face for
the Warren :) I've hinted at it here....
