(DL-N) In the heart of Whitbarrow
[DL] Meena
Meena found herself awake bright and early in the morning. She woke up a bit
disoriented by her surroundings, until she remembered the events of the
night before. She was flooded by a rush of sadness as she realized she
wouldn't get a morning hug from Demee. That feeling strengthened her
resolve. She had to find Stont's child for the sake of her own.
She could smell the aroma of breakfast wafting through the hallways. She
smiled remember what an excellent cook Hered was. Quickly washing and
dressing she headed out toward the kitchen of the same apartment situated
over the store.
"Good morning, Hered." she greeted him.
"Hungry, Meena?" he asked smiling.
"I'm always hungry for your food. It smells wonderful." Hered smiled,
clearly pleased with her compliment.
There was a knock on the outside door. Hered went to the window as he had
done the night before for Meena. "We're not open yet. Come back later."
"I'm here to see Meena." Meena looked up surprised, as she recognized the
voice. She stood up and headed to the window.
"T'grat, what are you doing here?"
"Well, if you come let me in, I'll tell you." he chided her good naturally.
She laughed and quickly ran down the stairs to open the door.
Ushering him in, she locked the door behind him. "Naomi sent me to help you.
She didn't like the idea of you going to find a child which might not exist
with only the help of an old man."
"Old? Whose old?" asked Hered.
"No offense meant, sir. I simply..."
Hered shrugged off his comment, "None taken, young man, I'm getting used to
it," he chuckled, and led them up the stairs, "We were just sitting down to
eat, will you join us?"
"I'd love to," he said, "I left very early this morning. Malachite flew me
just to the outskirts of the city and I walked the rest of the way. Had a
devil of a time getting him to leave me though."
Meena laughed, "I don't doubt it. But it was a good idea. We don't often get
dragons in this town. The arrival of one is a big deal."
"So do you know where to find this phantom child."
"He's real young man, I've seen him for myself." said Hered. "There's no
doubt he's Stont's offspring. The little girl... well, I can't be sure. But
the boy..."
"When did you see him last?" asked T'grat.
"Just before Stont was killed. He brought them and their mother in for some
new shoes." Hered looked at Meena, "I know Stont wasn't the most honorable
young man, but he did good by those kids, Meena. Even despite the talk that
they weren't his."
"We have to be able to prove it, Hered." said Meena.
"Just wait until you see him, you'll know right away. Lord Harkon wouldn't
even see the boy simply because he knew if he saw him, he'd have to
acknowledge him." Hered shrugged, "At least that's what Stont told me."
They finished eating and prepared to go. T'grat stopped the old man,
"Perhaps you should just tell us where to go and you stay here."
"I won't be in the way," Hered protested.
"No, it's not that, but we need a place to send the boy should we find him.
I think your shop would be the ideal location."
Grudgingly Hered relented. It wouldn't be good for his business if he closed
for the entire day anyway. So Meena and T'grat headed out on their own.
Walking across town toward the seedier side, they moved quickly. Hered had
suggested a bar called the Floating Dragon. Apparently it had been Stont's
favorite hangout and also where Greta had worked. Hered had warned them
about Harkon's guards, and sure enough, they were there. They, however,
payed no attention to the two as they made their way to the bar.
Meena followed T'grat closely as he headed up to the bartender. "Hello
Friend," said T'grat, quietly, "We are in need of a little information."
"What makes you think I'd be willing to give it to you."
T'grat threw a gold coin down on the counter, "I'm looking for Greta."
Ignoring the coin, the man threw a quick glance over at the guards, "Who's
Greta?"
"We're friends. We can help," said Meena. The man looked the young woman
over, then picked up the coin and motioned for them to sit. He disappeared
in a back room while the two dragonriders waited.
T'grat grinned at the woman beside him. "Stop worrying, it's going to be
fine." Meena hoped he was right. She looked hopefully at the bartender as he
came back out and picked up his cloth again. "Back there." was all he said.
T'grat and Meena stood and walked to the door he motioned to and went
inside. Inside they found an old white-haired woman waiting for them.
"You're Meena." It was less of a question the an actual statement. Meena
nodded and she continued, "You have the look of your brother. I know about
you... Dragonrider now. What do you want with Greta?"
"I have to find her son... Stont's son. He should be Lord Harkon's heir."
She nodded. "You know your brother said the same thing. What makes you thing
you can get your father to listen anymore then Stont did."
