Day 5- Evening

Darrkon and Link still sat at the table in the
rear of Travelers Rest. Bit of meat, crusts of
bread, the cores and pits of fruits, and the cobs
andskins of vegetables were all that remained of
their evening meal. Now were the ale hours, and
the dragonriders partook of the drought, but did
not indulge.. Link had been open about a number
of painful events in his life. Darrkon reasoned
he should return that openness in kind.

"It's eerie how well Naomi knows her riders." he
began. This brought a puzzled look from Link.
Darrkon explained, "The fact that she paired the
two of us. You lost your father and swore
revenge. You learned how to fight just so you
could take that revenge."

Darrkon was surprised when he realized the
hesitation he always feels when revealing
personal matters was greatly diminished. He
continued, "Well, I lost my mother, -very- early.
I was only five. But I swore to become a
dragonrider to avenge her, and protect other
people from bandits." Darrkon thought of the
years that followed his mothers deathand smiled
as he remembered his days as a bandit.
"Heh-heh...Of course my life didn't go remotely
on the route I planned. Did you know that I -was-
a bandit for many of my younger years?"

Surprise registered in Link's eyes, "No, I didn't
know that."

"Hmmm, I'm not sure whether I should like that or
not." Darrkon replied smiling, "It seems I'm no
longer on my minds and tongues of most of the
warrenfolk."

"What possible reason could there be to desire
having people gossip about you?" Link asked
taking a sip from his mug.

"I understand you're married." Link nodded, "Well
for a man like you, there is none. You've already
found the woman you'll..." Suddenly Darrkon's
thought turned to Aurianna, "Actually you're
right. When you've found the right one, what does
it matter what others think?"

Darrkon realized they had gotten way off subject,
"My point when I started was that Naomi paired
the two of us because she knew we'd find some
common ground. But, for the life of me, I can't
ever remember telling her my childhood history,"

"I guess that's a sign of a good warrenlady."
Link replied filling Darrkon's mug and then his
own.

The men continued their conversation for hours
until Link finally admitted it would be too alte,
and dangerous an hour for his mother to travel.
Darrkon noticed Link took his time leaving the
inn. The masked rider couldn't blame him though.
Even with the way things had ended between
himself and his father, Darrkon would move heaven
and earth, and wait until the end of time if he
thought they could be reunited.
