Day 12, late afternoon
Warrenlady's office - Jeneve and Breezy
<snip from Tree's post>
"Seriously Jeneve as your advisor I have now given you my advice on
that matter. But it's up to you. Now I have several questions that I
hope
to get answers to during this meeting. Tactics and strategy is always
interesting and I think you will find this meeting hopefully very
informative. By the way I have searched the files and I have yet to
find a serious evacuation plan. Do you know of where one might be?"
Jeneve shook her head, "I don't think I've seen one. Maybe S'ron has
it."
Breezy nodded to the young woman, knowing she hadn't seen one in the
wingleader's office in her earlier excursion. "I'll ask him about
it."
The women were interrupted by a knock at the door.
<end snip>
"Who is it?" Jeneve asked.
"An admirer bearing gifts..." came the reply.
Breezy raised an eyebrow.
Jeneve grinned. "Come in, Jack," she said.
As Breezy moved towards the door, it opened suddenly, and she was
knocked flying by an enormous wolfhound. As Breezy landed
unceremoniously on her backside with a thud, the dog, hardly breaking
stride, bowled over the slightly-built warrenlady, and began covering
her face with slobbery kisses.
"Fang!" she gasped, crying tears of laughter. "Get off!" she said,
pushing the dog away. "Yes, I'm pleased to see you too!"
The first thing that Jack saw, when he followed the dog into the room,
was the senior wingleader, sitting on the floor, a shocked expression
on her face.
"Breezy! I'm so sorry!" he said, though it looked more to Breezy that
he was desperately trying not to laugh. Rushing over, he gallantly
helped her to her feet, and began dusting her down. "Did he...?"
"Yes he did," Breezy grinned at the handsome young man - yet another
who towered above her, since Jack was even taller than his sister -
"but I'm fine. If I were you, I'd look after your sister."
"Oh, Jen will be fine," said Jack. "She and Fang are great friends.
But he was a *bad* dog to knock you over like that - how can I make it
up to you? Perhaps dinner tonight?"
Breezy's eye's widened. Three dinner dates in one evening?
"Thanks, but sorry, no Jack - I'm double booked already this evening.
And there's really no need,"
"Another time, then," said Jack, and Breezy gave him a 'maybe' look.
"Umm, Jack - I think we'd better check on the warrenlady," said
Breezy. "She seems to have disappeared behind her desk..."
Finding Jeneve laughing weakly as Fang continued in his attempts to
lick her to death, Jack took hold of the huge dog's collar and pulled
him off the warrenlady, who was sitting in a most undignified heap on
the floor, her hair in damp, dog-licked tangles around her face.
Trying to regain her breath, Jeneve managed to gasp: "How did you
manage to get him here?"
"I won't pretend it was easy," Jack admitted, "and it took time to
arrange. But I thought he'd cheer you up, and make you feel safer
around the place - he *is* a trained guard dog. That's why I bought
him in the first place for you before you left for Falagand - I was
worried about you living alone."
"Yeah - he'll lick people to death," said Jeneve. "No, I know, Jack. I
really am glad you had him brought here."
The huge hound lunged forward, pulling his collar out of Jack's hand,
and began to nuzzle Jeneve again. The warrenlady threw her arms around
the dog's hairy neck and laughed. "I think he's going to need some
obedience training, though..." she said.
Jack grinned. It was good to see a genuine smile from his sister these
days.
"We'll, I must be going," said Breezy, "got to get ready for dinner
with Link's family."
"Link?" said Jeneve. "Oh, that's good. Hope it goes okay... I'll walk
with you - I've got to see Uncle about some more poppyseed cake - it
seems to disappear alarmingly quickly!"
Then Jeneve looked at the state of her hair and her dress.
"But I can't go out looking like this - what will people think?"
"Don't worry!" said Breezy with a grin. "Just run a comb through your
hair and you'll be fine. We can go straight to the kitchen, and I'm
sure Uncle will forgive a few doggy pawprints on your dress, if you
leave Fang outside, that is! I can tell you a bit more about the
hierarchy of the wings on the way there, if you like.!
"Yes, that would be a good idea.." said Jeneve, disappearing into a
side room, "Go go ahead, and I'll catch you up in a minute."
"Well, I must be going too," Jack said to Breezy. "But if your dinner
date falls through, that offer still stands...."
"Thanks, I'll bear that in mind," Breezy grinned, as Jack left.
***************
*Outside, on the way to the kitchens.*
Breezy was leaning on a wall, waiting for the warrenlady, when Mentorn
spied her. Walking silently up behind the senior wingleader, he
whispered in her ear.
"Well, hello, gorgeous - are you ready for that dinner date we talked
about?"
To her credit, Breezy didn't jump out of her skin, but turned around
and replied, smoothly.
"Hi, handsome, but I'm afraid I've already got a dinner engagement,"
"Oh, such a shame," replied Mentorn, doing his best to look
crestfallen. "When I'd *so* been looking forward to it..."
"Sorry I kept you waiting!" said a breathless Jeneve, as she arrived
on the scene, dragging an unco-operative Fang.
"Oh!" she said, seeing Mentorn, and looking flustered. "I didn't see
you! Sorry, I don't think we've been properly introduced."
"How remiss of me," laughed Breezy, "Jeneve, this is Mentorn, rider of
Brazen - Mentorn, this is Warrenlady Jeneve."
"Charmed to meet you," said Mentorn, bowing and kissing Jeneve's hand,
while the warrenlady blushed frantically and gave Breezy a 'help!
look.
'Don't worry - he's okay' Breezy mouthed to her, giving Jeneve a
conspiratorial wink.
That was the moment that Fang chose to pull his collar free from
Jeneve's grasp and put his front paws on Mentorn's shoulders from the
side. Mentorn, already overbalanced, fell to the floor, on top of
Jeneve.
Jeneve shrieked. While Breezy, struggling to hide her laughter, hauled
the huge wolfhound off the prone couple, Mentorn got smoothly to his
feet, leaving the tousled warrenlady still sitting on the floor.
Fang, meanwhile, was doing his utmost to pull free from Breezy, in
order to reach Mentorn.
"I... I'm so sorry!" stuttered Jeneve, "he just pulled away from me
..."
"Apologies are totally uneccessary," said Mentorn. "It is I who should
be apologising to *you*!" Mentorn bent down and helped Jeneve to her
feet, taking the oportunity to look her up and down appreciatively,
only then realising that the warrenlady was only a very few inches
shorter than him.
"Oh, no - not at all," insisted Jeneve. "It was my fault ... Fang's
fault.."
"Ah, ah!" interrupted Mentorn, wagging his finger at Jeneve. "I
insist. I mean, look at your beautiful dress..."
Jeneve looked down at her dress, still covered with muddy pawprints.
"Oh! But that was Fang, not you!"
At this, Breezy just couldn't contain her laughter.
"Sorry guys, must leave you now - got to get ready for dinner."
Breezy left, hiding her sniggers behind her hand, leaving Jeneve,
still blushing and looking at the floor.
"Perhaps I could make it up to you by taking you to dinner?" asked
Mentorn, hid smile full of charm and sincerity.
"Oh!" said Jeneve, looking frantically for Breezy for backup, but the
Senior Wingleader had gone.
"It's not everyday that I'd get the opportunity to dine with such a
beautiful young lady," Mentorn continued.
Still flustered, Jeneve thought frantically. Mentorn *was* very nice,
and those dark eyes of his were so kind. And Breezy had said he was
okay...
"Well.... I suppose I haven't got any other engagements..." Jeneve
said, a shy smile creeping onto her face...
