[From Ben's post - Cat and Sabian
I've tried to squeeze it in between Ben's post, and Michael's, where S'ron comes in and shoos Cat out]
"S'ron says you're a cold blooded killer ... one of the worst he's ever
heard of."
"S'ron always put tpp much emotion in things. I don't run around with a
grim smile on my face whacking people. It's what I do to live. I don't
enjoy it or get a thrill out of it. That's why I'm good at it. You let your
feelings get in the way and you'll mess up."
"Why don't you think it's wrong to kill?" The funny thing was that her
voice didn't have a righteous edge. She was really curious why he thought
this ... she didn't have any sort of agenda. How interesting.
"These aren't good samaritans or lonely old women. I kill politicans. For
one they pay better ... but in the end, they all deserved to die. I'm not
robbing the world of any great men. If I'm there, you made me come."
[new]
Cat looked thoughtful, and frowned. "I think I can understand that," she said.
Then, after a pause: "I don't think I want to know *who* you were sent to kill here..."
"Wise move," interjected Sabian.
But Cat hadn't finished. "So... you didn't think there was anything wrong with me killing. Sorry - 'trying to kill' - that man back there?"
Sabian made a disparaging noise. "It was you or him."
Cat looked at Sabian seriously.
"Tell me, did you feel as bad as I did when you first killed someone?"
The assassin hesitated. To say 'yes' might make him appear weak and sentimental, while to say no might leave this interesting girl feeling crushed.
Fortunately for Sabian, Cat took the matter into her own hands, and continued: "Because, although I felt absolutely terrible back there - really shaky. I think that now - in the right situation, I could do it again."
Sabian didn't reply.
"Do you think that makes me - well - evil?" she looked at him almost pleadingly.
[next bit contains bits from Michael's post - Desperate times ]
On hearing S'ron's voice cut into the conversation, both Cat and Sabian jumped. S'ron motioned for Cat to leave the room, which she did quickly, closing the
door behind her, but not before mouthing 'talk later' to Sabian. The two that were left stared silently at each other for
some time.
Cat, however, remained nearby, hoping to catch at least snatches of the conversation, without risking detection.
[NRPG: Cat's feeling that, if she wasn't a hatching candidate, there are worse things to be than an assassin! :) Knowing Cat, the next thought's going to be: "hang on, can I be both?" After all, S'ron is a dragonrider and assassin. (OK, he's officially an ex-assassin, but when Cat's got an idea in her head, details like that don't matter <g>)
Also, Cat's not quite sure about what hellspawn are. She knows that there's *something* very strange and dreadful about them, but not sure what. This is one of the reasons why she's trying to eavesdrop. But she'll be cautious - she does not, repeat *not* want to get caught eavesdropping by S'ron! <g>
