Day 15, a little after dusk, just as the alarm sounds

Jack had been in the dining hall, playing dice with some of his
new-found friends, when the alarm sounded. At the sound, the riders he
had been chatting and gaming with shoved back their chairs and
scattered, each rushing to their dragons to take up their battle
stations.

Jack's first thought was for Jeneve.

Racing out of the dining hall, he realised that he didn't even know
where she would be. He decided that the most likely places were her
apartment or her office. Thanking his lucky stars that Jeneve didn't
live in one of the skyside apartments, and her rooms could be reached
by a flight of stairs, he pounded down the corridor and took the
stairs two at a time to arrive at the door to her apartment.

The door was standing slightly ajar, and Jack pushed it gently.

"Jen?" he said, softly.

There was no response and he stepped into the room. As he looked
around, Fang came padding in from an adjoining room?

"Hello, there," he said, absentmindedly scratching the dog's head as
he scanned the room. "Some guard dog *you* are!"

But it was obvious. Jeneve wasn't here.

Telling Fang to "stay", and not bothering to wait to find out whether
the dog obeyed, Jack raced down the stairs, cursing the minutes he'd
wasted looking in Jen's apartment.

Norwall's corridors seemed strangely quiet; everyone either knew their
place to go in a crisis, or they were lying low. No one had thought of
Jack when allocating duties in the event of an emergency - although
he'd been helping Jeneve with the warren accounts, a job he was
qualified in, Galen appeared to have passed over him when recruiting
for the home guard, probably assuming that he was just here as a
visitor, the warrenlady's brother, and probably not likely to stay for
long.

Slowing as he neared Jeneve's office, he took out the knife he
carried - the knife he'd never had to use - and looked at it grimly
for a moment before replacing it. The warren was being attacked, and
he was going to defend himself. And Jeneve.

And if she wasn't there ...?

Pushing open the door, Jack gasped as a vision of mayhem met his eyes.
Chairs had been overturned and ornaments smashed, but the first thing
that caught his eye was Breezy, struggling to haul herself into a
sitting position, cursing softly as she held her hand her head. Her
red hair was coated in redder blood, which was flowing
freely.

Breezy awoke to find Jack standing over her with a horrified
expression. He had two guards with him who were checking their fallen
member. Scrambling to her feet she staggered slightly her head
exploding with a million tiny stars. Groaning she rubbed her forehead,
then found her hand covered with blood.

"Breezy! You're hurt! Where is Jeneve!" Jack asked his voice filled
with worry, glancing at the fallen guard.

The Sr. Wingleader shook her head slightly to get her equilibrium.
Glancing over she noticed the dead guard, muttering an oath she looked
into the office to a still unconscious Antwin. But Lace, Silk and
their two captives were gone. Jack was behind her questioning, but
Breezy had tuned him out grabbing her knife she noticed it red with
blood. She knew she hadn't killed Lace but she was sure the woman
would have one hell of a sore throat at least. Breezy almost ran Jack
down as she headed down the hall with him and the guards hot on her
heels.

*********<time-snip>**********

Pointing at Jack she commanded, "Get that big mutt of hers and see if
he can track her. I want to know where they took her out! For all we
know she could still be here somewhere!"

Totally unaware that the wound on her head was still bleeding
profusely
Breezy looked at the robed group. "You got a choice, either help or
stay out of the way."
