[DL-R] Shot in the dark

NRPG: Sarah, I took Renaldo and the group to be members of Jae's party that
is hunting down Linaya... Tell me if I'm wrong... :)
"Renaldo! Adair! What the hell are you doing???" Jaewyn frowned as he put
his hands on his hips and glared at them.
"I saw something..." Renaldo tried to explain. "It was animal...and I hit
it..."
"You save your artillery until we need it," Jae snapped before turning his
back to the rowdy bunch and returning to his plans.
"You there..." he nodded to the soldier who had managed to chase the bear.
"Come over here for a moment... I want to get your opinion on this..."
The man walked over carefully and then peered down at the broken branch.
"Something about the way it's bent..." Hoj studied it some more. "The bear
wasn't over here...."
"No, I know..." Jaewyn nodded. "He came from the other direction
completely."
"It could be from another smaller animal..." Hoj offered. "But at this
height-"
The soldier stood back and then walked by the bush with his arms
outstretched. "No...it wasn't a small animal..." he said as he reassessed
his first theory. "It very well could have been our girl."
Jaewyn nodded and grinned. "That's exactly what I wanted to hear, old boy,"
he said cheerfully as he slapped the man on the back.
"Sir...if I may..." Hoj interrupted as he looked up at the sky. "You can
see the dark sky through the patches in the trees overhead. And there's an
odd stillness.... I don't think my bear was scared off by the sword, I
threw at him... I believe he was looking for cover..."
Jaewyn frowned but turned his head up to the canopy of trees. "You're
right...." he sighed. "Let's gather the group and head back to
Ralengarde... I'll probably end up sending another team out so mark this
spot well with something."

One was set apart by his uniform and Mery was sure he had to be a commander
or captain or something important. So she aimed herself at him. "You!"
He looked at her in surprise, "Excuse me."
"It's your fault! You scared her off! Now she's gone!"
"Pardon me."
"I am Merybelle Barman and I own the Traveler's Rest!"
"Ahh," he said. "I frequent your establishment from time to time. Excellent
food!"
"Don't try and change the subject. What did she ever do to any of you!
Nothing except help fight off Feldric's armies!"
The man sighed, "I assume you mean the young woman who attacked the
Weavers."
"She didn't do it." Toral said.
"Mr. Weaver said she did."
"And you took his word over hers! He's the one that beat them. He's been
doing it for a long time now, and none of you care!"
"Do you have proof?" the man asked. "Will his wife agree with what you just
said."
Mery frowned. So far Margaret had been completely cowed by Luther. Every
time anything happened, she blamed it on a fall. "No .. But you're the
soldiers! You should be able to find the truth, rather then chasing an
innocent girl away from her home!"
Jaewyn's jaw tensed and he turned to the man with this brassy lady. "Can't
you get control of your woman, man!"
Toral smiled. "She's got a mind of her own, Sir."
"Yes so I see... Call me a sentimentalist, but I yearn for the days when
women gladly had no minds," and with that Jaewyn tried to turn away from the
two.
"You didn't answer my question," Mery said steely.
"And you don't seem to know-"
Jaewyn stopped as a positively brilliant idea popped into his head. "You
said you know this girl?" he grinned.
"Yes...quite well...she would never do these things that you are accusing
her of."
"Well...." Jaewyn drew in the dirt with his sword. "There's no way I could
possibly know that unless
she returns to tell me what happened..."
Merybelle just stood and stared at him, or rather glared.
"And you must be close to her...?" he asked tentatively.
"Very close, yes."
"I see....so she must care an awful lot about you?" he grinned some as the
soldiers took his cue and began moving towards the woman.
Merybelle made a face. "What are you trying to say?"
"Nothing..." Jaewyn's grin broadened. "Guards...seize her... if we can't go
to our little escapee....well then...we'll make her come to us..."
"Shall we take her to a holding cell," Coriwyn asked.
"No..." Jaewyn shook his head and walked away from the commotion as he
talked softly. "Bring her to the castle.. Don't treat her like a
prisoner... She's not one... Just a....forced house guest."
<NRPG: Heheheh!>
