Kay was sitting on the green, using Sabbith's backleg as a chair, as he
painted. It was a picture of the watch dragon sitting on the highest peak
of the Warren. Of course from where Kay sat it looked more like a small
hawk, but the cliff face was magnificent.

The Sun was just starting to make it's trail back down as the day wore on
and the watch dragon glistened in it's rays. he was just putting some of
the greenery at the bottom of the cliff as a shadow feel over his canvas.

He turned to see Tera standing beside him. "Hi, Kay."

*Hi,* he signed.

"That's a beautiful picture," she said moving to get a better look at it.

*Thanks.*

"Do you mind if I sit down and talk to you a minute?" she asked.

He shrugged, *Sure.* He moved to give her room on Sabbith's leg. He lay his
brush and  paints down on his lap as he turned to look at the tall blonde
woman beside him.

*I wanted to talk to you about Kattibrie,* she reverted to signing. *She's
really worried about you and your sudden fear of Children.*

Kay frowned, *I'm not afraid of children.*

*Just of having one of your own.*

Kay's eyes rolled, *I don't want to talk about this.* He turned away,
looking back at his painting.

But Tera wouldn't let him off so easily, she tapped his arm, drawing his
attention back to her, *Why are you so afraid?*

*I'm not afraid. I just don't want to have any.* He shook his head, *Belive
me, it's for the best.*

"For who?" she asked.

*For everyone. This warren doesn't need anymore deaf people not doing
anything for it.*

"Kay?" Tera asked, looking at him in surprise.

He shrugged, *Besides, it's not fair to bring a child into the world
knowing this is how he'll have to live.*

*You listen to me! You are important to this warren. We all love you.*

*I haven't even been put back on patrols yet ..*

"You just have to go and talk to Retala. I'm sure she'll get you a new
partner."

*Maybe*

*Definitely!*  Tera insisted. *And what is so horrible about being like
you? You should listen to Kattibrie when she talks about you.  There are so
many good things about you, Kay ..*

*All but one thing,* He interrupted, *I'm deaf.*

*Just because your cousin treated you badly does't mean it will happen to
any of your children now that your in the warren. In fact I can promise you
it won't.*

*It's more then that,* he told her. *It's like not being a full person. Not
being able to enjoy the world just like everyone else.*

*And what is it you're missing out on? You've got the love of a wonderful
woman. You have friends who care about you ..*

*I can't hear ..* He looked at her unhappily, *I'll never know what a
wonder it is to hear you sing.*

Tera looked at him in surprise, not sure how to respond. Kay gave her a
weak smile, *I've watched others as they watch you and .. Danielle sing.
They are completely entranced. But I'll never truely know why.*

Suddenly Tera smiled. She took his hand and placed it against her jaw, with
his thumb just over her bottom lip and his finger resting gently again the
side of her neck. Then she began to sing .. a deep alto melody.

Kay watched transfixed as her  lips brushed against his thumb. He closed
his eyes and concentrated on her warm breath rushing past his thumb, the
vibrations of her throat against his fingers, the movement of her jaw
against  his hand. It was incredible. He'd been taught to make some sounds
and short words by vibrating his throat .. but this wasn't like that at
all. This was beautiful .. None of the words mattered, only the movements,
soft and subtle against his hand.

When she stopped singing he opened his dark eyes and stared at her. "How
was that?"

*Amazing,* he signed.

She looked at him gently, "See Kay,  you can enjoy my singing."

NRPG: Well, if nothing else she's got Kay realizing maybe he has his own
way to enjoy things he never thought he would :)
