Mid Evening, Day 4
Scene: The hatching party

"You look lost in thought."

"Just lost." Susan turned from looking at her drink and winked at
Niklas, "but if anyone else asks, lost in thought sounds so much
more...."

"Hopeful?"

"Exactly." She took another swill from the glass. "Look at her. She
doesn't even know I'm here. I mean.... god damn. So she Joined today.
Big whoop."

Nik looked over to where Illowyn was socialising with some of the other
riders, recently-joined or otherwise.

"Do I sense a tone of bitterness coming on here?"

"Oh, no, that couldn't possibly be," Susan said, feigning her shock.
"Who could be so ungrateful?"

Nik settled onto the stool next to her. "You want to talk about it?"

"No, I want to do something about it, but I don't think she would
understand. Unless of course, she feels the same way, and let's face it
there's more chance that the ground will open up and swallow me, which
is my preferred mode of exit right about now."

"Uh-huh." Nik could definitely see what she saw in Illowyn, and having
been through the hatching thing before he knew how it felt, to try and
engage and converse with the Joined. It was like they were on another
level somehow, which they were really. "Maybe you should write her a
love letter."

Susan brightened at that thought. "Hmmmm. Come to think on it, that
might actually work. If I could ever own up to writing it in the first
place. Oh yeah, and sneaking it into her possession, I couldn't do that
even without a drink in me."

"Say no more," Niklas said, folding his arms. "Wait right here." And
he left the party to find some writing materials.

Ugh. Now there's a word I've been using a lot lately. Well, I placed
my characters at the party, vaguely.
