". . .enclosed, a copy of my latest and undoubtedly greatest musical
masterpiece, a concerto for two violins and a pianoforte, written in the
unusual key of F-minor. However, I have not been able to find either a
second violinist or a pianoforte. I look forward to hearing it for the
first time when you send me a small selection of student-quality
instruments and an able assistant to play them until the children here are
sufficiently taught. More on this later.
"Also, several short songs, shanties and serenades, most in unofficial
ridicule of His Ungraciousness the fat old Baron of Agesrun, and three
praising the most generous and exquisite lady of Whiteriver Warren, where
we now reside. I will not go into the sordid details of my hasty exile
from my previous post; being no great orator I have chosen to chronicle my
trials through music, as demonstrated by the operetta I have enclosed.
Please note that the operetta is a tragio-comedy, and is a completely
seperate work from the beersongs and shanties, all of which are incredibly
scathing.
"On the Warren: I was fortunate enough to charm my way out of being drawn
and quartered. However, I could not escape being run out of Agesrun
completely. Fortunately, salvation goes by the names of Saul, L'rian, and
Trinale, and I now reside quite comfortably as the sole teacher of music
for the Warrenfolk. However, the instruments I brought with me (which
number three) make up about half of the total complement of the Warren.
So. I cheerfully request, in the name of song, that you find fit to send
me at least a few more instruments on which I could teach these children,
and hopefully an apprentice to help Telaran oversee their writing.
"That done, I have also enclosed a few more letters to various freinds in
and about the city. If you could, please see that they are distributed
appropriately.
Humbly,
Terau"
Telaran put the paper down and looked up at his father. "Anything else
you want to add?"
Terau mused. "Yes. Postscript: And as a favor to a freind, Cyrano; this
time, please don't tell her where I went."
Telaran raised an eyebrow, but obediently added the line to the bottom of
the page. "Done." Neatly, he folded the letter and laid it on top of a
stack of similarly folded pages. "I'll wrap it up, unless you've got any
last-minute additions. I overheard something about a caravan stopping by
tomorrow, maybe we can send it along with them. Want to go get some lunch
now? I'm starving."
Terau stood. "I can't think of anything else. Shall we, then?"
Telaran finished tying the packet closed, and took his father by the
hand. "Let's. Maybe Merissa will be there, too."
