**N'lin**
<Katla wants you to meet her outside the city gates,> Trefoil informed
N'lin.
N'lin sighed, and started walking faster. <Anything else?>
<Yes, and Tinka isn't happy about it either, you have to wait for her.
She can't take anyone with.>
<Oh,> was all he said, none to thrilled with the idea himself.
He came up to her and called her name softly.
"Katla?"
Chance smiled slightly. "Hey, N'lin. I... It's a place fairly close
to the city gates, but I can't take you in with me."
"Katla..." He tried really hard to keep the worry out of his voice.
She shrugged. "Standing rules, if Telven needs to see me immediately.
It's well known that he occasionally speaks to me at that tavern, but
where the information drop is... well, he can't afford to let the other
sleazy..." She took a deep breath. "Telven isn't all bad... Despite
the dent in his profits, he usually brings the information about...
children... to my attention. He doesn't believe in using them... only
'consenting' adults... What he does to gain their consent is a
different matter and..." Katla shuddered, "...I can only fight on one
front at a time. We do what we can for the older ones as well... But
the people he works with... They can't know where information drop-offs
are, or I'd be killed... or Telven would."
"I wouldn't tell them." Obviously they hadn't named her Chance for
nothing.
"I know you wouldn't, but... You'd be noticed. When I go in there,
I'll look much like anyone else. I can take you as far as where I'll...
change clothes, but you'll have to wait until I get back... And promise
me you won't tell Derry!"
"What?" When had Derry come into this?
"He'll try to stop me. Can't have that."
No, couldn't have that.. but he wished they could anyway.
They walked back into the town and she led him to a tavern just inside
the gates. No one took any notice of them, even when Katla went
upstairs to change. When she came back down, N'lin couldn't do anything
but stare... Was it really her?
She did nothing more then wave at him as she walked out.
<Tinka will tell me if anything goes wrong,> Foil said helpfully.
<Yes, but that will only be after the fact,> N'lin replied. Foil didn't
offer a reply.
Katla might be doing all the dangerous stuff, but sitting doing
absolutely nothing except worrying had to be just as difficult as
whatever it was Katla was doing at the moment. It most certainly was
quite a bit duller as well.
He sighed and tried to make himself comfortable, but he was too restless
and bored. His fingers tapped out random rhythms that probably got on
everybody elses nerves, but he didn't much care. He sat there
uncomfortably and waited, what else could he do.
**************
N'lin looked up as she walked in and felt some of the tension drain out
of his muscles.
"Well?" asked N'lin.
"I'll tell you when we get back. Looks good though, I think. I've got
to get out of this outfit, though."
His fingers resumed there tapping while he waited some more. At least
this time, he wasn't worrying overly much. The dragons weren't all that
great a source for this and he was practically burning up with
curiousity.
She went back upstairs and changed into her regular clothes. She and
N'lin were both quiet as the went back to their dragons.
"See you at the Warren," was all that Katla would say before 'Tinka
launched into the air and winked out.
N'lin sighed with impatience as Trefoil followed. He understood that
she probably didn't want to have to tell it twice, but it didn't
alleviate his curiousity in the least.
They landed and Chance slid down off of 'Tinka's back, her knees
crumpling slightly.
"Are you okay?" N'lin's concern was clear.
"Yes... Just over stressed my legs a bit."
N'lin bit his tongue, he wasn't going to say a thing.
"Care to go get some food? I've asked Derry to meet us there."
"Yeah. It's been a long time since lunch."
Katla laughed. "It has at that."
<....>
"So, you don't know if the children are Cill and Ojee?"
Katla shook her head. "No descriptions, other than young and virginal.
I'm going to see to it they're rescued anyway, but... they may be our
lost little ones. Thing is... Shawnee is under so much pressure, I
don't want to tell her about it and have her disappointed. The stress
can't be good for her, or her baby."
Trinale nodded, thoughtful.
Katla was probably right about that.
<Yes, Doshy says she's been under a lot of stress,> Foil said, sending
him an image of a stressed out Shawnee.
N'lin frowned, that image seemed almost incomplete. What... no who was
missing? Oh yes..
"Then why not just tell Saul?" said N'lin. "I mean... The kids know
him and..."
"That's not a bad idea." Derry frowned a bit in concentration. "We
don't really want to take too many people in... Technically, if we go in
there and break it up, we're stepping on Lord Fowler's prerogatives,
though I doubt that he'd have much of a problem with us breaking up a
child-auction. Politically, the fallout might be nasty... but Saul is
Shawnee's..." He blanked for a moment. "What do you call marriage
around here, anyway?"
N'lin barely bit back a grin as Trinale's eyes widened. She probably
wouldn't have been so startled if anyone else had asked that question.
Obviously she hadn't that far for her and Derry.
"Riders don't get married, they become mates."
Derry looked at Trinale, eyes curiously thoughtful. "I see."
Trinale unaccountably flushed and a giggle escaped Chance before she
could stifle it. Derry glared at her and she brought her countenance
under control.
"So, Saul is Shawnee's mate, so he has the excuse of being 'next of kin'
sort of... which justifies a small group." said Trinale and Chance
nodded.
"I don't really see how Lord Fowler could object to that, even if the
kids aren't Cill and Ojee... he knows they're missing... It's
completely reasonable if we were to crash the party."
They all looked at each other.
"I'll tell Saul," volunteered Derry. He looked at his sister and wagged
a finger at her. "You go take your pain killers and get some sleep.
We'll have to be up early tomorrow to plan. N'lin, do you want to come
along?"
"Wouldn't miss it."
Chance grinned and stood. "See you in the morning."
N'lin excused himself as well. He didn't go straight to bed though,
like he probably should. He was too strung up with, what he could only
call anticipation. It was a rather odd feeling almost foreign, yet
intoxicating at the same time.
<You coming to bed?> Foil asked sleepily.
<I think I'll walk around for a bit. I'll be in soon,> N'lin replied.
<Didn't you do enough walking today?> Foil inquired in the midst of a
what felt like a yawn.
<But that was to accomplish something, this walk is to relax.>
<I don't see the difference. Walking is walking.>
<Its all the difference in the world,> N'lin said with a smile.
<Whatever,> Trefoil managed before he fell asleep.
N'lin continued walking, enjoying the night. He thought about Katla,
but only for a moment before his thoughts drifted off. It was a night
for recollections, and he went from a woman he might love, to one he
must have had some strong feeling for; the one he'd seen in the flames
of a pyre.
He considered her face in his memory and found himself getting sleepy,
almost as if she had cast a spell on him. He headed home and got ready
for bed, drifting on the mental equivalent of a calm sea. He fell
asleep almost instantly.
*************************
*Morning*
N'lin walked out to the green in good spirits. He'd woken up that
morning with a clarity of mind that happens maybe once a month if you
were lucky. He'd thought then that it was going to be a good day and
not even Foil's grumpy mumblings had been able to persuade him
otherwise.
He waited with the others for Saul, who was the last to arrive.
"Is everyone ready?" he asked and looked around to see the others
nodding their heads. "Then Katla have Sakinka show us all a picture of
where we're going, and let's all pray we can bring the kids home where
they belong."
Derry nodded, "The thing is the actual sale isn't until tonight. Which
means that likely they will have the kids on the move all day today."
"My sources say that they're coming from somewhere northwest, but I
couldn't get a clear idea of where they were at .. We'll have a hard
time finding these people until the sale."
"Ralengarde is Northwest .." Saul said thoughtfully.
"There's no way they could come all the way from Ralengarde." Derry
pointed out.
Saul nodded and N'lin piped up, "They could on Dragonback .."
"K'leev wouldn't do anything like that to Cill himself. I know he loves
that little girl," Saul said.
<Then why did he take her away?> Trefoil asked, not understanding.
N'lin wasn't sure he did either, but he sushed his dragon anyway.
"...But it wouldn't take anything for K'leev to fly to Ralengarde from
anywhere in the lands .." Saul said, a bit frustrated, "And normally
he'd not be recognized there .."
Just then the four were approached by Caliban.
"I can't go. Lute wants to stay home."
N'lin blinked, a bit off balance. But then Trefoil would rather have
slept all day so he probably shouldn't be too suprised.
"I really don't know." Cali shrugged "But she was so insistent and
she's never asked me anything like this before. If I can I'd like to
indulge her."
<Cali's indulging Lute, so why couldn't you have indulged me this
morning, hmm?> Foil asked sourly.
<Because you were just being lazy, as usual,> N'lin said with a grin,
tuning out the conversation around him.
<Hmpf! Your not the one who has to fly around all day!> Foil huffed.
<Can't take it?> N'lin taunted. <We can always tell them your not->
<Don't you dare! I can take it just fine. I was simply pointing out
that I'm the one doing all the work, as usual.>
<If I recall correctly, I was the one doing all the walking yesterday.
You got to cuddle with 'Tinka,> N'lin pointed out.
<Yes, well that was just my day off. I've been the one flying sweeps
before that.> Foil sent N'lin an image of him trying to carry the great
green dragon on his back flapping by flapping his arms.
N'lin had started to turn his attention back to the human conversation,
which was starting to proceed along to matters that concerned him not
that Cali had left. He nearly broke out laughing at Foil's image, but
was saved by a sobering statement from Derry.
"You're going to have to be able to walk tonight, and I *know* you, you
overdid it yesterday. Last thing we need is to put you in the Med
Center for a day or two while your muscles un-knot."
N'lin immediately recalled how she had almost collapsed last night, and
looked her over with concern.
"Is this true?" Saul asked.
"Just ask Fayloth. 'Tinka's not hiding it."
<Is it?> N'lin asked Foil.
<Yes. Tinka says her rider is in pain,> Foil relayed rather soberly,
but then lightened as he added, <Tinka's rider is not very happy with
Tinka, because she won't let her go.>
N'lin looked at Katla's shocked expression. 'Not very happy' seemed to
be an understatement.
Derry suddenly laughed. "We've finally found a leash!"
"What?" asked N'lin, totally lost.
"Nobody, and I mean nobody, including father, is much good at making
Chance stop, but I bet that 'Tinka can..."
"Or I can." Saul looked at her. "Stay and rest for tonight... or will
we have to have someone at the Med Center dose you?"
Chance glared at the three of them. "I can take care of myself."
N'lin wasn't going to argue with that statement. Not after yesterday.
"I'm sure you can, but we need you functional later, Katla."
"Fine." If looks could have killed, there would have been dragon's
keening all over the Warren. Katla sighed. "Whatever. What about
strategy? I doubt that we'll be able to just waltz right in and take
them."
"Do we have a list of bidders?" asked N'lin.
"Yeah, but we can't just go talk to them, as that will break the whole
thing up." Katla replied. "We could be additional buyers... Surprise
bidders from Ralengarde, perhaps?"
Derry nodded. "We could get one or two people inside that way, if
someone can vouch for us."
"I'm sure I can arrange that. I'll probably have to be one of them
though." Katla shrugged. "I can arrange it
late this afternoon, I think."
"So, we'll wait for the bidding and then swoop in to grab the kids?"
"Whether or not they're Cill and Ojean." Katla looked at Saul. "We're
not leaving those children there, no matter *who* they are."
Saul nodded.
"Okay then. You lot go and do your sweep rides. I promise to soak in
hot water and take my meds. Okay?"
They nodded and mounted up while Katla walked off, muttering darkly.
********************************
*Late Afternoon*
Saul, Derry, and N'lin landed; Katla was waiting on the Green, a packed
satchel next to her. She gave each of them an indifferent stare, and
N'lin winced inwardly.
"Any success?" she asked offhandedly.
"No," said Saul shortly.
"I had someone take a message in to Telven. He'll be waiting for us at
a spot outside of Marketa. He's willing to go with us and give us an
intro... one which relies heavily on a letter he's having forged today.
If possible, he'll get us back to the kids even before the auction
starts, but there's no guarantee we'll be able to do that."
"How'd you get him to do that?"
Katla raised an eyebrow. "Money... lots and lots of money. Good thing
that we're doing well these days..." She grinned. "Actually, several
of my horses did well in racing this year... and my investments have
been doing well."
Derry snorted.
"I saw that report Papa sent. That's putting it mildly. I was
wondering what you were going to do with the excess." He looked over at
Saul. "Seriously, she was wondering what to do with the extra money, so
don't worry about it. Money doesn't do any good if you don't use it for
something good."
Saul shook his head.
"Anyway, Saul?"
"Yes, general?"
Katla wrinkled her nose at him. "Very funny. I want you to go in with
me. Cill and Ojean know you better than they know me. I want them to
know as soon as possible that they're safe. Derry, I want you and N'lin
just outside so that you can come in as soon as we have them... or need
you."
N'lin merely nodded. She obviously knew what she was doing and he
didn't.
"Saul you need to take some normal clothes... preferably something
reasonably fine... and menacing if you can manage it."
"Why?"
"So we match. We're representing an unknown but very wealthy interest
in Ralengarde. Do let's play the part." Katla batted her eyelashes at
him and laughed again. "Now, you'll all probably want to rest, I
suppose..."
"We've been sweep riding all day, Chance."
"What, it's worse than breaking horses?" taunted Katla.
"Wench." Derry had to laugh too. "No, I don't suppose it is, but yes,
we should have a chance to rest."
"Okay... You've *some* time. We're to meet Telven just before sunset,
then
Saul and I will ride with him -- in a carriage -- to the farm. Derry,
you and N'lin will have to show there after dark. There will probably
be guards of some sort and having a bunch of dragons land would be
fairly obvious."
He nodded. "Hey, N'lin, you interested in getting any food, before we
go?"
N'lin smiled, "Sure."
They walked to the dining hall, not saying anything. Food was at the
relative top of their lists of important things to do, not talking.
They walked in and got their dinner, loading their plates until nothing
else could fit as young men were apt to do, and sat down.
N'lin dug in, waiting until Derry had taken the edge off his hunger
before speaking.
"Is she always like this?" N'lin asked curiously.
"Who always like what?" Derry queried after swallowing his current
mouthful.
"Katla. Is she always so..." He waved his fork aimlessly in the air as
he tried to think of what he wanted to say.
"Bossy? Reckless? Head strong? Stubborn?" Derry asked with a knowing
grin that said he could add many more adjectives to that list.
"Yeah, all that..." N'lin stabbed his fork into some meat while he
waited for the answer.
"Yes, she is," he grinned. "Considering asking for a different
partner?" he joked.
N'lin grinned. "Naw, just thought it be nice to know what I was getting
into..."
Derry was still grinning when he answered, "A really big headache,
N'lin... But a headache that I care a lot about." His brown eyes
suddenly turned piercing. "And I think you do to..."
N'lin hid his discomfort with the ease of one who does it more often
then they should. He washed down his current mouthful and smiled,
meeting Derry's eyes like he had nothing to hide.
"She's a good friend," he wished she was more, but it wasn't likely to
happen. "Even if she is a headache," he added with a grin.
Derry returned the smile and the dug into their food, chatting lightly
about things they promptly forgot about.
********************
*Just Before Sunset*
N'lin walked out to what was becoming a rather traditional meeting place
with Derry. It took all of his self control not to stop and gape when
he saw Katla. She was possitively stunning.
<You should mate with her when this mess is done with,> Trefoil
suggested blithely. <Lev says its nice when his rider is with
Cricket's.>
N'lin was thankful that the uncertain light hid the dusky reddening of
his cheeks, which only got worse when Katla smiled sweetly at him.
<I can't,> N'lin said rather half heartedly.
<Why not? You like her...>
<Yes, *I* like her. But I don't think she likes me the same way, in
fact I'm possitive she doesn't,> he returned rather sadly. <Tinka will
probably tell you the same thing...>
Foil sent him a feeling of comfort and might have said more, but the
last of them arrived.
"Okay. Let's get the kids, shall we?" Katla said. No one needed to
reply.
They mounted up and their dragons took to the air. N'lin hadn't missed
how careful Katla had been mounting up, and was thankful she was being a
little bit more careful of her personal welfare.
They winked out, reappearing over a meadow in the woods outside of
Marketa. They landed and Telven came out of the woods.
"Are you sure you want to do this?"
"Yes."
"Then let's get moving." He looked at Derry and N'lin, who remained
mounted. "The farm is about two miles east. It should be well lit, so
you shouldn't be able to miss it."
Katla looked at Saul and then at Telven. "I'll need help up."
Saul helped Katla mount and they rode off. N'lin and Derry watched them
for a moment.
<Shall we?> Foil asked softly.
<Why not?> N'lin shrugged. <We might as well follow them since we don't
really have anything else to do.>
He looked towards Derry, though the light was dim, and if he made any
gesture, N'lin couldn't see it.
<Lev's rider agrees and Tinka and Fayloth are coming along too,> Foil
said, launching his green bulk into the air.
He wasn't suprised at their companions. They too, were playing the
waiting game. N'lin was getting rather sick of it, to be truthful.
They followed a ways behind the riders, partly to make themselves feel
better, partly out of boredom. N'lin was more then content to let the
dragons do the watching, he could hardly see anything anyway, they were
too high up.
The farm was as well lit as Telven said it would be, and N'lin started
looking for a place fairly close by where they could hide four dragons.
<See any place that looks promising?> N'lin asked.
<Not yet...> The suddenly shifted direction. <Fayloth found a nice
little area of trees not too far from the house.>
N'lin nodded, even if his dragon couldn't see it.
They flew over what, to N'lin, looked like a fair sized wind break,
perfect for hiding dragons from the lights of the farm.
They came in from the side farthest away from the farm and arranged
themselves in a sort of cirlce with Trefoil and Tinka closest to the
lights and the other two the farthest away.
They didn't dare light a fire, though with the dragons blocking the way,
no one would have been able to see it. At first they chatted lightly,
musing about what was going on inside. But as the hours past, their
voices trailed off and stopped all together as they each became wrapped
up in there own thoughts.
N'lin tried to coax a few memories from where ever they had all
disappeared to, but the wall was too high and he got tire of trying to
climb it. The obnoxious noise from the house wasn't helping either, and
boredom was quickly getting to the point were he was losing his nervous
edge.
He took out his pipes and started to play softly, and the darkness and
the trees swallowed the sound.
<...>
N'lin stopped playing abruptly as he realized that the house was nearly
silent. He wasn't sure exactly how long it had been, only that it was
late, maybe midnight or early morning.
<Is Lev's rider awake?> N'lin asked. He was suprised that Foil hadn't
dozed off.
<Yes.>
N'lin nodded and shifted possition again. He'd gotten up, like Derry,
and had walked around a bit to prevent cramps. But it was so dark that
he probably hadn't done it often enough for fear of triping over
something. A sprained ankle was not on his list of things to acquire
tonight.
<N'Lin, Tinka's rider says you can go in now if you hurry,> Foil said
suddenly.
N'lin was on his feet almost immediately heading towards the house with
Derry right beside him. Within minutes, they were walking inside.
"Is this safe?" Derry asked.
"Safe enough... The other potential buyers are sleeping."
"Sleeping?" N'lin blinked at her. She grinned.
"Telven was kind enough to see to it that the others stay out of the way
for the rest of the night..."
They could hear hoofbeats in the distance. N'lin started to feel a bit
more energized, despite the long night.
"They're coming," said Saul.
Without speaking, Derry and N'lin took up positions on either side of
the door. A knock came before the door burst and two men came in,
dragging two semi-conscious children.
The door slammed shut behind them as Katla and Saul turned toward
them.
"Hello..." N'lin vaguely heard Katla say, but he was too busy snatching
a kid out of the bastard's grasp to hear the rest.
As gently as possible, he picked up the child, who, at a closer
inspection, turned out to be Cill, and moved her away from the
kidnappers.
Katla smiled nastily.
"Then I suggest that you cut the price out of Owlean's hide. She
cheated you... those kids don't belong to her, and those who care about
them were more than willing to do whatever necessary to get them back...
You think about that..." Her last words coincided with Saul's punch,
which laid the man out flat. Katla smiled approvingly and looked over
at him. "So why
didn't you do that when K'leev came after you?"
"Shut up!" he replied as the second man seemed to come out of his shock.
She shut up as Derry handed one of the kids over to N'lin and got into
the fray. It took a bit longer to subdue the second man, but neither
Derry nor Saul were injured.
Katla made her way over to N'lin and the kids, helping him tear the
shrouding blankets off and smiling.
"Thank the gods!" Katla swept the two kids into her arms. "Cill...
Ojee... we've been so worried!"
N'lin couldn't help but grinning to, until he noticed how out of it they
both looked, especially Cill.
<Coming, Foil?> he asked happily.
<Already here,> Foil said.
<So I hear,> N'lin said, wincing as the dragon's bugles went into some
rather hairy discords.
Ojean opened his blue eyes looking around him. He spotted the bearded
rider as Saul turned toward him, "Saul?"
Saul grinned and held out his arms. The ran to him, "Saul .." he said
beginning to sob.
Saul hugged him close "Jean-o," his voice whispered, as his own tears
flowed. Finally releasing the boy, he grinned with glistening eyes,
"Gods... Let's go home... There are so many people who will want to see
you!"
N'lin grinned and looked down at the little girl in his arms. She
looked almost like she was going to wake up, but he was worried.
He gently picked her up and walked out to his dragon. Mounting was a
bit akward, but he managed, and Foil surged into the air.
<Lets go home,> N'lin said, holding the image of Whiteriver in his mind.
And then they were there, admist all the dragons bugling at the top of
their very large lungs.
<What's going on?> N'lin asked, wishing he didn't have the Cill in his
arms so he could plug his ears.
<An egg! Lute laid an egg!> Foil exclaimed happily.
<How? Last time I checked, she wasn't a queen,> N'lin asked confused.
<I don't know, but she laid one. Isn't it great?>
<I guess... Land over by the Med Center. Cill's not awake yet and I
want to make sure she's all right.>
Trefoil turned and headed for the Med Center, landing gently in front of
it.
N'lin dismounted, careful of Cill and walked in. Clarissa was there to
meet them, and led him to a bed, where he gently put the girl down.
"I think she's just drugged," he said. "I don't think they'd give them
anything that would hurt them though."
Clarissa nodded. "You should probably go get Racine. She'll want to
know that her daughter's back."
N'lin nodded and walked out of the med center to Racine's apartment. He
knocked on the door.
"Come in," came a muffled voice from inside.
He opened the door, and walked in, not bothering to close it.
"Racine?" he called out.
"Right here," she said, appearing from another room. Her brown hair was
mussed and he guessed the dragons had waken her.
"Good news," he said with a grin. "Cill's back-"
He never got to finish as her eyes widened with shock, and she suddenly
turned boneless. He barely caught her before she hit the floor in a
dead faint.
Cursing under his breath, he knelt down, put her head in his lap, and
lightly slapped her face, trying to wake her up.
"Who is it Momma?" a young woman called out, her head peaking into the
room. Her hand flew to her mouth and she rushed to them.
<Who-> N'lin asked.
<Her name's Mara, she's the oldest,> Foil answered.
"What happened?" the girl asked as Racine started to come around.
"I just told her Cill's home and she fainted," N'lin answered.
"Cills home?!?" Mara asked, and for a moment N'lin was afraid she was
going to faint to.
He nodded and turned his attention back to Racine who was awake again,
but still paler then he liked. He and Mara helped her to her feet, and
N'lin led them towards the door.
"C'mon, lets get you to the Med Center..." he said as they led the shaky
woman out the door. He didn't mention that Cill was there too... he
wasn't sure she could take that.
The made it to the Med Center without incident and N'lin led them over
to the bed where Clarissa still was with Cill. He was pleased to see
that the girl was awake, but she looked rather groggy.
He and Mara let Racine go as she rushed over to her daughter and
smothered her in a hug, tears running down her face.
<Have Juniper tell Clarissa about Racine fainting.. she might want to
check her out,> N'lin told Foil.
<Done,> Foil answered.
Clarissa looked at him for a moment and nodded.
"Cill? Cill?!?" Racine called from the bed. N'lin turned and saw Cill
hanging limply in her mother's arms.
Clarissa rushed over to the bed and gently pried the sleeping girl from
her mother's arms. N'lin gently led Mara out of the room and left
Clarissa with the frightened woman.
"Don't worry..." he said softly to the young girl as he led her to a
bench to sit down.
