<<Day 2 - Late afternoon>>

The walls of his office .. hell! The walls of the med center .. were
beginning to give Th'rin a blinding headache. He'd barely left it since *the
fight*. Telling Merissa he would pack his things was really a major joke ..
for how could he even begin? It was much easier to throw himself into his
job .. as he did so often before.

But even his familiar lab and office brought him little solace. Still he was
unable to bring himself to face to many people .. particularly Merissa ..

<You'll have to face her eventually.> Areena reminded him.

Th'rin merely groaned in response. Areena must have taken this as a good
sign from her rider, as she pushed the point. <Better to get it over with,
don't you think?>

<No! I do not!> Th'rin grumbled.

Non-plussed Areena continued, <Maybe seeing her will be good. I mean I know
you love her, and she loves you.. maybe seeing each other will make you both
forget about that silly argument over Xanthia.>

<No .. she won't forget ..>

<You don't know how unhappy she is without you.> Areena remarked.

<Unhappy?>

<Of course, dear one, she's very unhappy. Chrysthal and I keep no secrets ..
I'm sure Merissa knows how unhappy you are as well..>

Th'rin frowned, not sure he liked that idea, but Areena had a plan ..

<She will forgive you.. I think she probably already has ..>

<You think she has?>

<I do.> Areena said with great certainty. <They are having another party in
the dining hall tonight .. go wash your face and go see her, Th'rin.>

<Oh .. I don't know ..>

<She can't forgive you if you don't give her the chance ..>

<< Party & Wedding >>

He looked in the mirror, admiring himself. Not bad .. surely he was
presentable enough for Merissa. He would smile and promise her his love,
wiping the unhappiness from her beautiful face ..  It played out so
perfectly for him. He had convinced himself that Areena was right! Tonight
they would make up!

<Okay, Areena, I'm coming now ..>

<Good!> Areena beamed happily. Her rider was extremely unhappy without
Merissa .. and she did not like him unhappy!

Carefully, so as not to muss his outfit, Th'rin climbed onto Areena's back
and gave her the go for the short flight to the dining hall .. the happy
reunion playing out in his head as they went.

He walked confidently into the brightly lit room, his eyes searching out his
mate. He heard her before he saw her .. it was ironically the happy musical
sound of her laughter that began to shatter his resolve. Areena had said she
was miserable .. she was supposed to be unhappy. Why was she laughing?

He turned to see her being escorted onto the stage. Gods! She looked so
beautiful .. almost glowing .. she certainly didn't look miserable.. or
unhappy.

His knees began  to shake and he couldn't stop himself as he turned and fled
the dining hall.

<What??> Areena asked dismayed as he ran toward her. <What are you doing out
here??>

Th'rin shook his head, unable to reply. He couldn't tell her he'd failed.

<Th'rin! Th'rin!> Areena insisted as he climbed onto her back, <Where are
you going?>

<The med center ..> Even his mind voice was choked.

<Buy why? What about Merissa??>

<I'm needed there.. it's .. it's corra's night off ..> It was a lame excuse
.. but it was an excuse that wasn't nearly as painful as the truth.
