[DL-W] Wounds of the past

*Day 37, midmorning*
Latnem left the med center with a joined orderly in order to search for his
former patient, N'lin. He worried, with the lad's history, what a mating
flight would do. As well he was fighting his own inadequacy. Seemed it took
a dragon to get anywhere other than ground level in this warren.
"Where are we going?" the orderly asked.
"N'lin's apartment, I would imagine."
"N'lin? He won the flight! He could be anywhere with the new queenrider."
The orderly's eyes glazed over for a minute. "Ah... that's where he took
her. Here, I'll take you there."
Another way the joined were at an advantage, Latnem mused. Communications
were greatly facilitated with the aid of a dragon. A person didn't need to
have a disability such as Xanthia's to see the benefits of that.
He thought of his father... The man he'd never met. A rider, he was told.
His dear departed mother, Razni, told him when he was but a small lad of
what a brave and courageous man her father was. So why, Latnem wondered,
had he never met him? Why didn't he come after him when Razni had passed
on? Did he even know he had a son?
He didn't even know his own father's name, let alone if he was alive or
dead. For all he knew, his father could be right here in WhiteRiver.
Indeed, he often scanned the faces of all the older riders he encountered,
hoping for some recognition. All he had for reference was an ancient
picture that his mother kept in a locket.
Beautiful Razni, Latnem thought with a shake of the head. He fingered the
locket, which held the images of both his father and mother and now hung
about his own neck. How he fought to keep the image of her lovely face
alive in his mind, studying her tiny picture within the locket at least
once a day. He was but 7 years when his mother passed over to the other
side. The healers at Tinobal had virtually adopted him, fostering him and
teaching him the ways of healing, but mostly mind healing.
"Over there," the orderly gestured, breaking Latnem away from his thoughts.
He could hear soft moaning from over in a corner.
"Thank you," Latnem replied. He approached quietly, careful not to startle.
He had no idea in what condition he would find N'lin. The two forms were
huddled together. He did a quick scan of both auras, and observed that
both N'lin and the lady he was with were at the same place emotionally. He
drew a deep breath and let out a long sigh. Likely the lady, a queenrider,
had also been abused as N'lin was.
"N'lin, my lady," He gently touched each on the shoulder, "I'm here to
help." He spoke in the soporific tones he was taught during his mind healer
training at Tinobal, carefully lowering his volume, pitch and cadence to
produce a calmative quality.
"Arri, her dragon says her name is," the orderly supplied after consulting
his own dragon.
Latnem nodded his thanks to the orderly. "Arri, my name is Latnem, I'm here
to help. I'm a friend of N'lin's. N'lin, Arri - I'm here to help." he
repeated again.
*****
NRPG: Tag Bets and Bridget! Since I don't know where they went (they'd need
a dragon to get to N'lin's apartment, wouldn't they?) or even if they
completed the mating, I'll leave it here and purposely left those details
vague so that you two can decide.
