Day 8 - Early Evening
{I don't believe you made me leave} Rosie complained to her sister on the
way back to their room. She'd been determined to stay until the two dragons
laid their eggs, and then until the eggs hatched, but her sister had
insisted they leave.
{You can't stay there indefinitely} Daisy told her silently. {You have to
eat - and sleep - and bathe} she commented, {you think any dragon will want
you if you're a smelly, tired bag of skin and bone?} she looked at her
sister to see that Rosie was shaking her head.
"It's just so exciting" Rosie said aloud as Daisy let them into the small
room they shared. The elder twin rolled her eyes at hearing how exciting it
was *again*
"I can't believe I'm really going to join with a dragon" the elder twin
mouthed as her sister said it aloud for the umpteenth time since arriving at
Whiteriver.
{It might be a good idea if you didn't believe it until it happens} Daisy
suggested, although she could tell her sister wasn't listening. {I'm going
out} she told Rosie, {see you at dinner?}
"Mmm-hmm" came the distant reply as the younger twin settled herself on the
bed so that she could look out of the window in the direction of the
hatching sands.
Leaving their room, Daisy ran across the warren to the dining hall. Rosie
might be able to sit back and convince herself that once she joined life
would be easy, but Daisy knew better. Even if she was joined, her life
wouldn't get easier, it would get far more dangerous. The elder twin almost
couldn't bring herself to think about that - and whether her sister joined
or not, if they were going to stay here then one of them at least needed to
do something to contribute to the warren.
Daisy had asked everyone she met what their function was at Whiteriver in
the search to find something to fill her days. There wasn't much use for a
full time artist in the warren, although it was an inspiring place for one.
There were lots of jobs to choose from though, and one thing Daisy had never
been afraid of was a hard days work. She'd thought that she might like to
work at the med center, or the school - and then someone had told her about
a vacancy in the kitchen.
When she showed up there shortly before dinner, her timing couldn't have
been better! Three of the regular workers had been taken ill with mercury
poisening - one of them seriously, and the remaining staff were struggling
to feed the warren. Another pair of hands - young and willing to help out
however she could was just what they needed.
