"I'm carrying your child, B'lin. Now, I don't know about you, but I think
having two good parents is more im-por-tant than anything else. Me, I'm
one of 'em. You want to be the other one.... well do you?"

B'Lin blinked at her and then crossed his arms in front of his chest.

"Illara....if your dragon is dying..." he let his voice trail off. Wouldn't
Erkiven's death have affects on the queenrider as well?

Ilara waved her hand, obvious that she didn't want to discuss the different
consequences. "What about the baby, B'Lin?"

"Of course..." he nodded slowly. "It's my child...of course I'll be a
parent to it....and perhaps you could give lessons to Lecia about being a
good mother," he added, glaring at his wife. He still wasn't entirely over
being interupted earlier. "R'har isn't being cared for properly, but I
suppose that is another matter that I'll have to deal with..."

He sighed, tired from being angry with Lecia...why didn't she love their
son? "Lecia...I'm going back to the apartment...R'har has been with the
nurse for far too long...sometime I think that he feels she is his mother
instead of you... Ilara...you will let me know if you need
anything....perhaps you will go to those classes that Lecia would never go
to regarding the whole birthing process..."

He turned on his heel and walked out of the room, leaving the two
queenriders alone.

*Belarade*

She closed her eyes and smiled, listening carefully as he rolled the words
out of his mouth... His hands, though calloused and rough, lovingly wrapped
themselves around the split binding of the novel. She studied him closely,
the weathered edges of his being telling a story of the hard times in his
life...reading all of the wrinkles and lines was not unlike reading a story
as well, and Belarade itched to know it all.

"You have a lovely reading voice..." she said as she sat up some. "You give
life to the words.."

A smile creased the corner of his mouth and he nodded bashfully. "Thank
you...it's sort of a boring story, I guess..."

She shook her head. "I thought it was nice...but you know...I don't know
that much about you...why don't you tell me about you... I do'nt know that
much...what brought you to Xylian?"

You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died
each year when the leaves fell from the trees and
their branches were bare against the wind and the
cold, wintry light. But you knew there would always
be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again
after it was frozen.

-- A Moveable Feast, Ernest Hemingway
